WoW Moviewatch: Healer parody

Before there was Nyhm, there was a guy, sk3uled, and his Avril Lavigne CD. What did he come up with? A parody video, Healer, to her song, Girlfriend. You can thank (or curse!) Baron Soosdon for this submission. At least it wasn't a Sir Mixalot Rickroll.

The lyrics are probably the best thing about the video. The "singing" is monotone and the aspect ratio isn't consistent. Believe it or not, this is the better version. His previous attempt, made over a year ago, was recorded with a bad microphone and what looks like a bunch of pictures thrown into a slideshow program.

WoW Moviewatch: What's My Age Again?

At what age are you supposed to grow up and start behaving yourself? For this gnome, the answer is never maturing. There are girls to chase, pranks to pull, and plenty of people to offend.

What's My Age Again?, named after the Blink 182 song, won't win any prizes as a machinima. However, you can see that if Mavryc practices enough, he could be great. He went a bit wild with Model Viewer, but didn't pay enough attention to aspect ratios and chroma-keying. The fast cuts look great, though!

WoW Moviewatch: TMV Hell 2

(Some of the content of this video is of a (mild) adult nature. We've placed it behind the cut.)

RaffyTaffy has released the second machinima in the TMV, or Taffy's Music Video, Hell series. Similar to Olibith's Never Stay Tuned series, and Khandy's What Else Is On!, it parodies songs by popular real life artists.

While some of the parts are amusing, most are often too literal. However, I already see an improvement over the first TMV Hell that was released almost three months ago. Given how many songs there are out there just begging to be mocked, RaffyTaffy will have plenty for new material in the future!

WoW Moviewatch: Baby It's Cold Outside

I chose some lighter fare for today while you get your patch 2.4 fix on. Garritt Windspire, of Windspire Entertainment, made the cutest music video in World of Warcraft. Being a short one myself (but not that short!), I find gnomes absolutely adorable. Baby It's Cold Outside is no Baron Soosdon production, but for what it is, it works well.

While I liked the video, there were some obvious flaws with it. The aspect ratio seems wonky, and the page turns are pretty cheesy. However, I thought that the surprise in the middle broke the music video up nicely. What's your favorite WoW music video?

WoW Moviewatch: We Will Rock You

Before Telemora went on to make his Warcraftmovies recommended The Luckiest, he created a little music video, We Will Rock You. He finished the film way back in March 2006, but it just reached over one million views on YouTube yesterday! The video is part music video, part battle, but all rock and roll.

By today's standards, this might not be considered a spectacular machinima, but back then, it was chock full of special effects, color correction, and transitions, in a time when not so many were doing that. Telemora went on to be one of the higher ranked WCM contributors, however hasn't released anything since last year, which is a shame. If you'd like to watch a higher quality stream, check out the version on WeGame.

WoW Moviewatch: Streamline

It looks like Fishface went a little filter-happy this weekend. He created Streamline, a short music video based on the Pendulum song by the same name. As Baron Soosdon said on the video page, it would be a lot better if the cuts were in sync with the music. In addition, the L70ETC band didn't really fit in with the type of music that he used.

Otherwise, I found it to be enjoyable. There's not much of a plot to go on, so just sit back and enjoy the billions of color filters that he applied. If you liked Streamline, check out the high resolution version!

WoW Moviewatch: Rock Rockin' Tha Spot

(As the pic above states, that was one of the safest pics I could link. The management has asked me to make clear that this music video is very Not Safe For Work (NSFW). It contains language, pixel nudity, and Olibith, who warrants a NSFW tag on his own ...)

Baron Soosdon has been teasing his blog readers for over a week with pictures of his latest music video, Rock Rockin' Tha Spot. RRTS is a visually stunning masterpiece that will have you dancing in your chair, but it leans more towards the MTV crowd with it's content. However, it's totally worth watching, if for no reason other than the copious amounts of cows!

WoW Moviewatch: Arithmomania

Artists like Yume, the creator of Arithmomania, and Baron Soosdon are proving that you don't need a storyline to produce a quality machinima. With a heart pumping soundtrack provided by Dogzilla, Yume uses a variety of transitions and filters that would normally bog down a movie. Here, it all fits into place.

You won't find much of a point to this video, but if looking upon the vast scenery of WoW makes you sentimental, you'll definitely enjoy it. The editing is right on target, and the filters are applied to coincide with the music. I'd have to say that my two favorite scenes involved the spinning stats, and the split screens that slowly moved in opposite directions. If you liked Arithmomania, definitely check out the high-res version.

WoW Moviewatch: Welcome to the Jungle

Twenty years after "Welcome to the Jungle" was released, Axl Rose is making a comeback ... as an orc. When a woman is sexually harassed by guards, a mysterious man comes to her rescue. As they make a run for it, Guns N' Roses takes to the Warcraft stage to perform their hit song.

Revenge is sweet, and so is this music video. David Ciavarella did an amazing job on the editing, creating a visually stunning scene. While I wish there were more of a storyline to it, I do love the cut scenes of the band rocking out. I highly recommend viewing the high resolution version. He also gives us a preview of what will be his final machinima film, "The Hunt." Say it isn't so, David!

WoW is a Work of Art, part 3: All the world's a stage

We have discussed ways in which World of Warcraft is not only full of audio-visual art, but presents in itself a gaming experience that can reward players the same way that art forms like music or film can. For some, however, WoW is not only a game, but a stage. For them, the gaming element may sometimes fade into the background, when it becomes only a means to an end; they use WoW as a combination of acting and creative writing, telling stories and making performances all their own. They call it roleplaying.

One kind of roleplaying that is getting a great deal of new attention these days is "machinima." For those who don't know, machinima is basically a kind of film in which people use the game's existing 3D models and environments to make their own movies, and then share these movies with everyone on the internet (or very rarely on TV). As we have seen here at WoW Insider and elsewhere, these movies are especially powerful as comedies and music videos, especially for viewers who are already familiar with the game that they're made with.

But for most people who roleplay, it is not a scripted performance, but an improvised one; it is not carefully lip-synced, edited recorded and for all to see, but imagined, written out, and remembered only among those who played the parts. Someone not familiar with roleplaying might wonder why people bother with it.
