Shamus Young talks about his favorite WoW nitpicks

Most folks are probably at least aware of Shamus Young's DM of the Rings series. It was the only web comic I've ever religiously checked every day, on the off chance the creator was feeling kind and had put up an extra comic. DMotR has long since finished, but Shamus is still out there blogging on various gaming topics.

Shamus started playing World of Warcraft about a month ago, and has been having the same growing pains many of us rookies did in our younger levels. But since Shamus is something of a name in the pen-and-paper gaming Internet circuit, it's interesting to see what he has to say in his review of WoW.

His first complaint is about low drop rates for quest items -- yeah, the eyeless Murlocs of Westfall spring to my mind. Most of the other issues are pretty familiar (bag space, respawns, res sickness). But one that did really stick out for me was a complaint about the in-game day/night cycle. Shamus would prefer a four-hour cycle to Azeroth's day, so that he could actually see the change. I think it's a fair point, even if we have heard it before. So, Shamus's list doesn't really bring a brand new light to how we view Azeroth, but it's still an interesting read.

Own your own talking Murloc plushie this September

It seems like Murlocs are the monster that everyone loves to hate. Almost everyone has a story of that one horrible Murloc battle that ended up in in tears and multiple corpse runs. Seriously, the nerve of some NPCs, actually grabbing their friends for the fight! The next thing you know, they'll be attacking the one in the dress instead of the heavily armored tank!

But seriously, for all our hatred, we probably couldn't imagine our WoW careers without Murlocs. They're a fun, distinct, and different race, and aside from the cold slimy fish thing, they might almost be sort of cuddly. That Nerglish language is a lot of fun too. In that vein, wouldn't you sort of like a Murloc pet?

Play.com is advertising a talking Murloc plush pet that should fulfill most of your Murloc loving needs. To be released on September 30th, it will cost £24.99 via their site (Which is about $49.50), and say multiple phrases in Nerglish. Multiple phrases? How many ways can you say "mrrgrglgrglgrgl," anyway?

Anyhow, it looks pretty cool, and I'm sure it'll be destined to be a pretty hot selling item. Now we just need a Naga Siren plushie to keep it in line...

[Thanks for the tip, Grimmy!]

Wanna be friends with a murloc?

Who's yer buddy? Murloc's your buddy! At least now he can be since he has his very own MySpace page. Did you know that a murloc's heroes are Jay & Silent Bob? Of course you didn't but now you can learn even more fun facts about murlockind by following his blog. Although his posts are written in Nerglish (e.g., "glmrmrgrbaba! mrllgrmrmrgr grmrmrblmrllrlmrgrmlbllb" is one of his most recent comments), he's provided handy translations for us via an unnamed enslaved Troll. His writings offer insights into his budding filmmaking career and his ongoing feud with his nemesis, Aquaman.

Now I'm not much into MySpace, but this profile had me cracking up. Whoever is writing it has the Murloc mindset down cold and provides some funny roleplaying fodder. I don't think I'm alone in wishing Murlocs were a playable WoW class -- even though I know my wish is in vain. I haven't yet gone so far as to play the Murloc RPG, but it does pique my interest.

Oh, and ladies, he's single! Catch him while his current mood is "rockin" and before it changes back to "angry."

"I am Murloc" free download for Guitar Hero III

All your dreams have just come true, my friend. Now you can be a murloc AND a rockstar. Thanks, I assume, to the Activision merger with Blizzard, the companies are doing a cross-promotion for their two most popular games. Starting tomorrow, June 26, you can snag a free download of I am Murloc, for Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock. You may remember this delightful little metal ditty from the video below, an ode to our favorite aggro-licous gurglers. The song is performed by Blizzard's in-house band, Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain. You can get the download from either Xbox LIVE® Marketplace or PLAYSTATION®Store as a free promotion supporting the Worldwide Invitational. If you don't know anything about Guitar Hero and have been living in a box for the last few years, you can find out more on their website or on our sister site, Joystiq.

And now, for your easy-listening pleasure, I present I am Murloc. Thank you and good-night!

The Spore report: Murloc sightings

It won't be long until you'll be able to hear the lilting sound of "mgrlllmgrlrrr" across the universe. Spore, the new game from The Sims' Will Wright, which involves creating a species from a single living cell and evolving it all the way through space colonization, is growing murlocs. The official release of Spore's Creature Creator isn't due until Tuesday, June 17, but somehow it broke free early, giving WoW players an early start in trying to create their favorite Azerothian creatures.

We got a peek at some of these creations. The little guy to the right was created by a Spore user named Saphirus. If you check the Sporepedia, you'll find some more murloc attempts -- including one by WoW Radio's Duncor. There's even an odd attempt at a kodo (you wouldn't know it except from the description) and a strange looking crocolisk.

[Thanks, Andrew.]

Breakfast Topic: Horray for n00bies

We have a policy of not using much gamer slang here on WoW Insider. I'm feeling a little naughty today, so I'm going to take this opportunity to break the rules. N00b is on the list of words we generally avoid. It refers to players who should have learned the mechanics of the game, but continue to make stupid mistakes. We are surrounded by n00bs from the Hunter who consistently tab targets to the Shaman that utterly refuses to use Totems.

We've all been subjected to the annoying Murloc game where people spam trade chat with movie titles with Murloc replacing one of the words. I find this behavior to be somewhat juvenile and nearly completely asinine. I never participate in the trade chat spam, but like I said, I'm feeling naughty. I propose we go to town with the word n00b. I'll start:

  • 2001: A n00b Odyssey
  • Charlie and the n00b Factory
  • Plan n00b from Outer Space
  • Indiana Jones and the Temple of n00b.

Alright, it's your turn!

/e defiantly accepts her punishment and saunters down to the torture chambers in the basement of the WoW Insider headquarters.

Murloc on board

No idea where Richard got this Murloc decal (it is floating around on eBay, if you're so inclined to try and grab it there), but it is pretty darn sweet. Forget about the Horde or the Alliance -- I want to brand my car's window with the best race (soon to be faction) in the World of Warcraft.

Unfortunately, according to the Murloc translator, what's printed on the window there is just gibberish, not an actual Murloc saying handed down from the Oracles of years past (like, you know, "honk if you love Murlocs"). Still, I'd laugh if I saw it, no matter what it means.

We've added this pic to our gallery of WoW license plates car-related WoW art. If you've got a pic we should have in here, feel free to send it along and we'll take a look.

The new and improved Murlocs

Just in case you missed it the other week, my absolute favorite part of all the new expansion news was that we will, for the first time ever, be doing something with Murlocs besides killing them. In the Borean Tundra, there will apparently be two Aldor- and Scryer-like factions, with one being called "Wolvar" and consisting of "wolverine people" of some kind (probably not the same as Worgen), and the other being our favorite gurgling landfish.

Which is not only awesome because, man, we sure missed Murlocs in Outland, and also because apparently the Oracles (that's what the faction will be called) will be a reputation faction, so we'll actually get to earn reputation with Murlocs. We have no idea how we'll possibly communicate with them, though -- rumor is that they're "more evolved" than the murlocs we've been fighting so far, but it would be super out-of-place to see a Murloc saying anything other than "Murrrglgglrrlgglll!!"

Then again, we already know it's possible (at least unofficially) to capture a live Murloc and develop a translator. Never underestimate the power of goblin ingenuity, I guess.

Report Card: Phase 4 daily quests

Phase 4 is now well underway, with about 50 servers having it unlocked according to us.gorgonnash.info at the time of this writing. There's still a few more things to unlock, but for the most part, the Sunwell Isle is complete, and what you see is what you get as far as resources and places to fight. So, once again, it is time to ask the question: How do these quests fit into your busy up-to-25-daily-quests-to-do lifestyle?

They fit pretty well, actually!

Report Card: Phase 3 quests

Phase 3 is now in full swing on many servers, including mine, and this time, we're working on taking the Sun's Reach Harbor as well as opening up the long awaited badge loot vendor. How do the quests stack up this time around? Does the near flawless run for great dailies from Quel'danas continue? I've had a few days to try out the runs, and I have to say that there's a few rough spots, but you can continue to grow your list of dailies with confidence as the new phases come on.

Phase 4 Dailies: Disrupt the Greengill Coast

Disrupt the Greengill Coast opens up as soon as Phase 4 begins, and is given by Captain Valindria. She can be found on board the ship(known as Silvermoon's Pride) parked in the Harbor which you took in Phase 3.

Captain Valindria is apparently the SSO operative in charge of dealing with the Naga infestation on the southeastern section of Quel'Danas. Like most people in Azeroth, she needs our help. This isn't just another kill quest, but it is a kill quest in disguise. I recommend doing it alongside Don't Stop Now... because you'll be killing the required mobs simultaneously.

It turns out the Darkspine Sirens are mind controlling the Murloc slaves you see throughout their camps, and they're doing it using some fancy orbs. An Orb of Murloc Control is what you want, and they drop off of the aforementioned Sirens. You want to throw and smash them into a camp of murlocs to release them from their control, and turn them on their Naga masters.

What these means is the Orbs work like grenades, targeted AOE spells, et cetera. When you right click the item, you'll get a targeting circle that the previous bombing quests have trained you to use, and throw them at a pack of murlocs. You need to free a total of 10 murlocs, so try to get as many of them in the ring as possible to cut down on Orb hunting.

Simple quest, and fantastic to do alongside Don't Stop Now... as I mentioned before. Doing them together will net you some easy money. Even if you don't do the other quest with this one, you'll still get a pretty decent reward. 11 gold, 99 silver, and 250 Shattered Sun Offensive reputation. Note that this quest doesn't help to progress anything on the island, and will not change once the Alchemy Lab is acquired and the Monument to the Fallen is completed.

If you need more information on this quest, please head on over to Wowwiki or Wowhead!

Valentine's Day fun from the official EU site

WoW-Europe.com offers up some Valentines Day fun today, showing off the winners of their Valentine's Day art contest, as well as offering a free Valentine's Day e-card to send to your sweetie.

Interestingly enough, a lot of the winners seem to have had Murlocs on their minds. Not exactly the most romantic Warcraft race that I can think of, personally. Well, I suppose a bouquet of Murloc Heads to a sweetie who's been killed by them one too many times could technically be a pretty romantic gesture. You know, in a "I will crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and let you hear the lamentation of their womenfolk" way. Do Murlocs even have womenfolk? I suppose they must, considering how many of them there are.

Anyway, check them out, and have a happy Valentine's Day!

More clay dolls from Maidemao

World of Raids came across some more of those clay dolls from the other day, and holy moly are they cute. Lookit this Voidwalker! And this hearthstone! Awesome.

Her blog is all in Chinese, so it's a little hard to read if you don't speak the language, but here's a gallery of all the new pieces. And there's no word if any of these are for sale yet-- forget about Figureprints, I want one of these of my character.

And lesser related fields

or

"I Can See My Hearth From Here, and It's Getting Closer."

The Ultrasafe brand of dimensional transporter incorporates two versions thus far discovered by M.E.G.A. Research & Development. The first version Gnomish Engineers are able to learn is the Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan. The second learned is the Ultrasafe Transporter: Toshley's Station. Here we will discuss the various risks and rewards of the use of the Ultrasafe brand of transport, and briefly touch upon similar transport methods associated with the Goblin Experimental Explosive Korporation.

World of WarCrafts: Murloc Fin Soup

Every Wednesday World of WarCrafts features a recipe that shows you how to make own real life version of in-game recipes and items.

There are many "tasty" sounding things to eat in the wonderful world of WoW. I have often wondered what some of these things would taste like, others give me the willies just thinking about eating them but whatever. As a result of my wonderings I came up with this IRL version of Murloc Fin Soup. The only thing I had to work with was the in game recipe that called for Murloc Fins and Hot Spices, not even any Refreshing Spring Water! How could that be soup? Not exactly sure, but I figured that the recipe, or lack there of, gave me a bit of creative license. I hope you enjoy my IRL Murloc Fin Soup. You will find a translation key following to help you find the ingredients from your General Goods Vendor.
