Free character transfers for April 18th

Bornakk announced today that free character transfers are available for the following realms:
  • Illidan
  • Mal'Ganis
  • Sargeras
  • Tichondruis
  • Warsong
You can transfer from the above realms to:
  • Azshara
  • Maiev
The transfers are available from today at 12:00 p.m. PDT until next Friday April 25th at 12:00 p.m. PDT. Of course, Blizzard reserves the right to shut down the transfers if they meet their internal numbers prior to the close date. They have been known to close down transfers early, so transfer soon if you want to take advantage of this.

WoW Insider will always keep you up-to-date on the latest realm news, so stay tuned!

Free realm transfers (EU only)

Thundgot, the undead European CM, announced today that there are a few free character transfers amongst realms that will be starting today, and go through March 25th.

You can move from Al'Akir, Frostmane, Grim Batol, Outland, or Twilight's Hammer over to Burning Steppes or Spinebreaker. Of course, this only for all our European readers. No U.S. realms are current open for free transfers.

If you want to take advantage of this, do so quickly! They often close down these transfers early when they meet their internal goals.

Enjoy your new realm!

Free character transfers

Blizzard CM Bornakk announced that the following free character transfers will be available from Wednesday, February 13th at 12:00 p.m. PST until Wednesday, February 20th at 12:00 p.m. PST. Of course, these times are fully dependent on Blizzard reaching their transfer goals.

For the PvP servers, you can move from Illidan, Mal'Ganis, Skullcrusher, Smolderthorn, Tichondrius, and Warsong to the Anetheron server.

For the PvE servers, you can move from
Aman'Thul, Dath'Remar, Khaz'goroth, and Nagrand to the Caelestrasz server.

Be sure to move as soon as possible! The transfers have been known to shut down early when Blizzard reaches their goals.

Free WoW, courtesy of AT&T

It looks like WoW gametime is the new iPod shuffle, in that it's something companies give out to try to entice you to switch away from your current providers. Now AT&T is offering three free months of game time to anyone who is willing to switch from cable internet to "high speed Internet from AT&T," which I assume means DSL. Normally I wouldn't recommend DSL over cable, since it tends to be (much) slower, but if you use your connection mostly for WoW, email, and web type stuff anyway, it doesn't really matter. DSL does tend to be a bit cheaper.

There are a few caveats, of course. You need to be a new customer, and as far as I can tell, you need to keep your account open at least a month to get the reward, and there was something about a $75 modem charge, but there was also something about $125 cash back (the fine print is a little confusing). The offer is open until January 31, 2008, so you have a little while to make up your mind. If you've got cable but don't like it, free WoW is never a bad thing. Did anyone take advantage of the DirecTV offer from a few months ago? If so, how did it go?

Don't forget your gems!

Since it's the first of the month (or close enough), those of you with Consortium rep (which would be roughly anyone over level 60) should remember to fly out to Aeris Landing in Nagrand and visit Gehze for your monthly lot of free gems. The better your rep, the more gems you get, and the more likely they are to be blue-quality. Both of my high-level characters are merely honored, so I got a couple of Unmarked Sacks of Gems, each containing three or four uncut green-quality gems. Not huge, but hey, a few extra gold never hurt, and it's certainly enough to be worth flying out for every month. Blizzard originally had plans to have the gems come in the mail, but that was buggy and they ultimately scrapped it in favor of a monthly quest.

The different rewards, depending on your Consortium reputation, are:
Maybe it's time to start grinding Consortium rep...any tips on that? Also, jewelcrafters, do you see a spike in your business around the beginning of the month? Just curious.

2h Axes and Maces might be free for Shamans

While we were at BlizzCon, Eliah did a great job of catching something even I missed (and I played-- and respecced-- my Shaman on the event server, although I don't have any points in Enhancement, so that's probably why I missed it). Shaman are very likely picking up some serious buffs in an upcoming patch. And now, Drysc has confirmed that if one of those buffs, Shamanistic Focus, goes through, then Shaman will get 2h Axes and Maces as a baseline ability, no talent points needed.

Pretty darn sweet-- now, I can use my healing mace to heal, my spell damage dagger to DPS, and my 2h mace (haven't found one yet, but I will) to melee. And think of the itemization in the future-- a 2h mace with uber spell damage and Windfury on it? Hawt!

The original thread that brought about Drysc's comment was asking for Shaman swords, and I do agree that even if 2h talent doesn't get made free, Shaman should be able to pick up 1h swords-- we're already at enough of a disadvantage with our low mana efficiency to have to pass on those swords to Mages and Warlocks (sure, the lore doesn't really fit, but this is Shamans we're talking about!). But I'm more than willing to trade those away for free 2h Axes and Maces (and the promise of itemization for us in WotLK). Because what I really want to wield as a Shaman is one of those gigantic 2h totems, and Maces are just a step away from that.

Warcraft comic book free to read online

The Warcraft universe is constantly expanding. Trading card games, sound tracks and board games abound. It seems we can't get enough of Azeroth online or off. Blizzard has tried to meet this growing demand is by creating a series of fiction novels and comic books. One of those endeavors is a Korean manga title, Dragon Hunt, the first novel in the Sunwell Trilogy that was published last year.

Now, our friends over at the WoW Europe official site have made Dragon Hunt available to read online for free! Every week they are putting up a new chapter. So far there are three chapters to read and I already can't get enough. Head on over, check it out and tell us what you think.

Countdown to Burning Crusade: Day 5

You still have 45 minutes to win a Leeroy t-shirt. Today's Countdown to Burning Crusade contest also brings you yet another chance to score a 60-day game card, and to take it home you'll have to give us the best description of World of Warcraft -- the only catch is, you only get four little words in which to do it. We've stolen borrowed the idea from our friends at Second Life Insider (you know, that other world) -- you'll have to boil down your expansive experience of WoW into a four-word extract and leave it in this thread by 3pm EST tomorrow, January 6. We'll pick the best four-word summary of World of Warcraft to win a 60-day game card.

Ready? You're up!

Countdown to Burning Crusade: Day 4

Alright folks, it's that time again -- time to announce the day's Countdown to BC contest. Yesterday you were faced with the difficult task of Photoshopping this image to win the original Warcraft book trilogy (stay tuned for the winner announcement later today for day 2 and day 3 winners). Today we're going to make it easy on you again -- all you have to do is comment in this thread to win a Leeroy Jenkins t-shirt in your choice of size. You have until 3:45 pm EST tomorrow, January 5 to leave your comment, and we'll /Need roll to determine the lucky winner.

On your marks... get set... go!

Countdown to Burning Crusade: Day 3

Welcome to day 3 of our Countdown to Burning Crusade! You have a precious short few minutes to enter the day 2 caption contest, so head over there for a chance to win a 60-day game card. For today's contest, we're going to stretch you even further -- it's going to require some Photoshop-fu (or The Gimp, or whatever you use to do that thing you do) to take home today's prize, which is the complete original Warcraft book trilogy: Day of the Dragon, Lord of the Clans and The Last Guardian.

In the venerable tradition of Fark, you'll need to apply your creativity and your Photoshop skills to the above image (just right-click to download a copy). You can do whatever you like -- add caption bubbles, drop in a new background, graft on real human heads, whatever you want -- the only rule is your result cannot be NSFW. To submit your entry, send a JPG version of your image to us at countdowntobc AT wowinsider.com, and make sure to include "Countdown day 3" in the subject. Your file size must be under 5MB and it must be received by us no later than 3:30pm EST tomorrow, Thursday January 4. We'll choose one lucky winner to receive the original Warcraft Universe trilogy and publish the best of the bunch tomorrow. Good luck!

Countdown to Burning Crusade: grand prize contests and rules

You will be able to participate in most of the Countdown to BC contests each day as they're announced, but you'll have to work a little harder to take home any of the three grand prizes. We're laying out the rules for the final three contests here so you can get your creativity on for a chance to win a Logitech G15 keyboard and a Jinx World of Warcraft hoodie, a Sennheiser PC 160 headset and mic set and a More Dots! t-shirt, or a Belkin N52 gamepad and a Green Linen t-shirt. Read on for the skinny on the three grand prize contests and get details on how to enter.

We're kicking off with something dead easy for you: using the tried and true Need roll method, you have a chance to win a 60 day pre-paid time card just by leaving a comment in this thread during the next 24 hours (contest ends 3:01pm EST tomorrow, January 2). We'll /roll to choose the winner from the commenters below and announce the lucky player tomorrow. Of course, you must enter with a real email address so we have a method of contacting you.
