Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational contest is becoming quite a production. They've just announced another contest as part of the lineup: a costume contest! Just to recap, let's see what has been announced:
Actual gameplay contests, in Warcraft III, Starcraft, and WoW
Hands-on play of Starcraft II and Wrath of the Lich King
...and now a costume contest.
The fourth annual WWI will be held in Paris, on June 28th and 29th. So you have just over a month to scrape together your best Curator suit and learn how to say "gallery rules will be strictly enforced" in that disaffected, slightly psychotic robot voice. Get cracking! I want to hear your costume ideas in the comments.
As I said the other day, we're always happy to give some more notice to various RP events happening around the realms, and here are two (one on the US and one on EU) coming up in the next week or so.
First up, there's going to be a Horde hoedown (they're not really calling it that, I just thought "Horde hoedown" was a good name) on May 10th at 8pm server over on Steamwheedle Cartel. There'll be a concert with skits and performances (including prizes for the best one), a best dressed contest, and storytelling around a bonfire. Seems fun -- if you want to perform, they're asking you to post on the board, although if you just want to watch, you can probably just show up.
And over on EU Moonglade, they're holding a belated May Day event on May 11th. That one starts at 8:30pm server, and they're asking you to come dressed in your best and brightest Spring clothes. It seems a little more formal than the bonfire, but there's no reason you can't sneak a good Spring Ale in.

There's candy corn on the forums, the Headless Horseman is in the SM graveyard, and everyone's wondering what to wear for a costume this evening, so you guessed it-- it's Halloween again!

And don't forget-- no matter where you are, be sure to send us pictures. We're looking for some great in-game costumes for our Hallow's End contest, and of course we're always looking for great real world costumes with a Warcraft flavor! If we get enough real-world costumes, we'll put them all together in a gallery later this week, and our in-game costume contest ends Friday-- drop us a .jpg of the in-game costume to wowinsidercontests@gmail.com, and be sure to include your name, email address, street address, and age in there as well. This year, Elizabeth and I headed off to Atlanta, GA to cover Dragon*Con. In its 20th year, Dragon*Con is the United States' largest Pop Culture themed 4-day geek-fest, to put it mildly. While you won't get official numbers from the organizers past 20,000 participants, we heard whispers of numbers well over 40k in attendance if you counted each membership separately as opposed to combining the single-day passes like they do.
For our first year, we primarily set out to spread the WoW Insider love and get to know the community. That said, the reception and excitement we got from the Dragon*Con community at seeing us there overwhelmed both Elizabeth and I. It has ensured that we'll both be back in 2008 to cover all the myriad World of Warcraft goings on for WoW Insider! (As well as ensuring that we'll be back to help run the First Annual Dragon*Con MMO Costume Contest, slated for 2008!)

Last night's costume contest was immensely impressive. There were a total of 98 entries and all of them obviously took a lot of time -- and some of them clearly took a lot of creativity. I still think my personal favorite was the fellow who dressed up in a costume like the in-game Murloc costume -- he even ran across the stage just like the Murloc suit animation! However, with all of the great entries, he didn't take the top spot. Props for creativity have to go to the fellow who came to the contest dressed in a blue-and-white checkered box (if you don't realize, the checkered box is what the game shows when it doesn't have a model for something). We've got quite a few contest photos in our gallery, but sadly many of the contestants moved very quickly from one side of the stage to the other, resulting in a lot of blurry images. But there's a decent shot of the four winners, including a Human Rogue, a Moonkin (he even did a Moonkin dance for us!), a Tarran Ghost from StarCraft, and a Warlock in their amazing tier 6 armor set (she had the helmet as well, though it's not in this shot).
However, enjoy the ones we've got, and we'll be adding more costumes to it as we see them on the show floor today!
Update: Joystiqer Kevin Kelly is out on the show floor as well, and it looks like he got a much better view of the stage than we did -- so be sure to check out Joystiq's excellent gallery.
Yeah, yeah. It's nice to come to the convention and attend developer panels about how they develop the classes and how they build the dungeons. And sure, it's fun to play brand new, cutting edge, not even close to being released yet content. But the real reason to come to a nerd convention like this is to see all of these crazy people and the incredible costumes they put together.
So we've saved you the trip-- here's a gallery of the best costumes we've seen around BlizzCon 2007. This gallery will also be updated throughout the day, so keep checking back to see the latest pictures of people who put a ton of work into bring Blizzard to life (some for the better, like the awesome Rogue above, and some...not so much).
We're getting ever closer to the Big Day! In our countdown yesterday, we asked what you would ask Blizzard if you had the chance, so we can ask them when we have the chance -- and keep sending us questions! They're great! Today, however, we're tackling a much less serious topic. Judging from the pictures from the 2005 show floor, I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing plenty of players taking off this opportunity to show off elaborate costumes. But which of you, dear readers, will be heading out to the con dressed as a Night Elf or a Warlock? (And for those of you who haven't yet considered attire, there's plenty of costume inspiration on the 2005 BlizzCon site -- though it may be a bit late to start thinking about costumes.)

And both contests have been done before -- this marking the 4th year of pumpkin and the 3rd year of the costume contest. The rewards are not astounding (a copy of WoW and the board game for the pumpkin-carving contest, and a copy of WoW with a years' subscription for the costume contest), but the contests sound fun, nevertheless.
