Officers' Quarters: Broken alliances

Every Monday Scott Andrews contributes
Officers' Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership.

No, this column isn't about one of the most annoying Horde-side quests ever. Seriously, who actually goes back to Badlands -- the farthest possible point in Azeroth away from any Horde zeppelin or portal -- at level 50 to do this one stupid quest with subpar rewards? Does any quest in the game out-level its zone more than this one? OK, so maybe the beginning of this column was about that quest. The rest of it, however, is going to be about ending your alliance with another guild, because that's what this week's e-mail is asking about.

Hello Scott:

Your Officers' Quarters: Dark pacts [columns] helped our guild a lot. I am an officer of an progressing casual guild. We currently have enough signups that we no longer need an alliance. The alliance guild helped us somewhat in progressing so it's hard to tell them to simply go away since we have enough guild members to fill the raid.

My question is how should we approach the alliance guild to peacefully break the alliance and make most if not all the people happy?

Thanks,

Findra

Vivendi earning statement hints WotLK to be released in second half of 2008

Vivendi earning statements announced today hint that Wrath of the Lich King is expected to be released the second half of 2008. This would also fit into dates that we've seen on sites like Amazon and Gamestop.

This is also significant in that it's the first time an official confirmation of a release time frame has come out. And being that this is the data sent to Vivendi investors, it comes with a good bit of clout.

Additionally, the statement tells us that World of Warcraft now has 10.7 million subscribers, up from 10 million at the end of 2007.

The exact paragraph in the statement is after the break. And of course, stay tuned to WoW Insider for all the latest Wrath of the Lich King news.

World of Warcraft hits 10 million subscribers

Well it didn't happen within 2007 as quite a few people predicted, but World of Warcraft has done it-- Blizzard has announced that their massively multiplayer game has hit ten million subscribers worldwide. Asia is the biggest market at the moment, with more than 5.5 million players, as compared to North America's 2.5 million and 2 million subscribers in Europe. Blizzard also says the past holiday season was a big one for them-- they picked up "thousands of new and returning players" in the past few months.

Here's a world population chart for comparison-- for perspective, Blizzard's game currently has a (paying) population about half the size of Australia. While 10 million is impressive to say the least (this game has already cemented itself a place in history as one of the most popular games ever made), just how far can they go from here? Will Wrath of the Lich King be able to bring more players out of the woodwork, or is Blizzard reaching critical mass in terms of how much attention they can attract? Will we be posting in another year that they've broken 11 million, or more?

Live patch notes for 2.3

The realms may not be back up for another few hours, but at least we have the official, live notes for patch 2.3 to pore over! These are the ones shipping with the patch itself. Check back later for analysis and dissection; for now, I just want to get these notes out there as quickly as possible. I really wish I wasn't going to be in class all day today, so I could sink my teeth into some of this new stuff. On first glance, these don't appear to be too different from the latest PTR notes, but expect a full report of any changes in the very near future.

The Gods of Zul'Aman

The stronghold of Zul'Aman has stood for millennia as the Amani trolls' seat of power and bastion of the fearless, cunning warlord Zul'jin.

Zul'jin has spent several years plotting behind Zul'Aman's walls. Furious at the Horde for allowing his hated enemies, the blood elves, to join its ranks, he eagerly embraced a scheme that the witch doctor Malacrass recently proposed: to seal the power of the animal gods within the bodies of the Amani's strongest warriors.

Now Zul'Aman's army grows more powerful by the day, hungry to exact vengeance in the name of its fearless leader, Zul'jin.

It's official: 2.3 set for the 13th

Well, here it is, official word that patch 2.3 is scheduled to go live in North America on November 13th, one week from today. Season 3 is set to start on November 20th, so here's your two-week notice. That means 2.3 will be live for a week before S3 is. The PTR was just updated tonight with a new build containing unknown changes; I guess it must not have required very much testing. Just posted in the official forums by Drysc:

While testing continues and a delay could possibly change these dates, we are currently planning to start Season 3 on November 20 once the realms come back up from their weekly maintenance. This means that Season 2 will come to a close when the realms come down for maintenance on November 20. During that maintenance the final standings are taken and the end of season rewards are distributed.

The start date for Season 3 is purposefully planned to be one week later than the release of patch 2.3, which is currently scheduled for November 13. We will be closely monitoring the testing of the 2.3 patch, and if it looks like it won't make the November 13 date, we will announce a delay.

This confirms earlier news pulled from the WoW Taiwan site. Guess it's time to lay off the alts (at least until Tuesday) and get farming Sporeggar rep.

2.3 next week, according to WoW Taiwan

Well, that's sooner than expected. The official World of Warcraft website for Taiwan is announcing, as far as I can tell via Google Translate, that patch 2.3 is going to be released on the 15th in Taiwan. Presumably, that would mean it's coming out on the 13th in North America -- that's a week from today. This is what Google comes up with:

"World of Warcraft" in Taiwan for the forthcoming age! To celebrate the "World of Warcraft" operating in Taiwan for two years, Blizzard Entertainment specially for Taiwan players in the game are now held in the colorful "花火Festival." People expect 2.3 version also will be November 15 (4) maintenance and Taiwan after the players met, "World of Warcraft" dual program installation package tomorrow (7), the province's convenience store channel synchronous devices.

If anyone reads Chinese, could you head over to the site and see if it is, indeed, predicting the patch in merely a week? Edit: The mysterious M below confirms that the site says the patch is coming out on the 15th in Taiwan. Woot! Edit 2: confirmed. Also, what's that festival about? Party time!
