WoW Moviewatch: The Frozen Chronicles

We tried to hold out for Azerothian Super Villains - Episode 6, but it wasn't released in time for us to blog it this morning. In the meantime, we have a mystery machinimator on our hands! Ram, the creator of The Frozen Chronicles, registered for Vimeo in May, has no Warcraftmovies account, and barely uploaded the video anywhere. What we do know is that he submitted it to Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational machinima contest.

In all actuality, this short film is as much of a mystery as the creator is. Regardless of the plot, which was not mentioned in English or their native French, it is an amazing film. It looks like a sequel may be in the works as well!

Around Azeroth: Mystery trip

In the United States, the Fourth of July is Independence Day -- the day when we celebrate our country's independence by blowing up a small part of it. If you can't tear yourself away from WoW long enough to watch the fireworks, this screenshot should provide all the pretty colors you need. Our unnamed submitter, possibly Jayvor on Sisters of Elune-US, painted the sky above the Isle of Quel'Danas (and some of its archers) red, green and blue. Are we looking at a video card error, some engineering gadget, or a computer that's discovered how to manufacture its own drugs? What do you guys think?

Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wowinsider.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!

Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Happy Fourth, Americanos! I'll see you at the fireworks.

WoW Moviewatch: Veil of Corruption

With the premiere of Azerothian Super Villians - Episode 6 set for tomorrow, we wanted to start you off with some epic weekend viewing. By epic, we mean Veil of Corruption, a 115-minute machinima that neglects the hero-based storylines you're used to. Instead, they focus on what they refer to as politics and connivery.

VoC is about the struggle for control in Azeroth. In an attempt to receive the answer he has been praying for, the Alliance Grand Marshal, Paladin Valerius, goes on a soul-searching mission that leads him to the tomb of Uther Lightbringer. When peace seems to be within reach, he begins to wonder if it will last ...

With voice acting in German and subtitles in English, this movie took a year and a half to make from about 60 pages of script! Believe it or not, this is actually only the initial part of a planned trilogy. If you enjoyed the first hour, check out the ending, which was too long to go in the stream above.

Around Azeroth: Mark of death

Shadowmoon Valley is a dreary, depressing place, and Illidan's front yard is no exception. While waiting outside the Black Temple for raid time, our unnamed submitter ran into Doomwalker (upper left) and an unfortunately incinerated man (lower right). See, this is why your raid leader yelled at you to spread out and avoid the chain lightning.

Sams: Microsoft could do more for PC gaming

Blizzard's COO Paul Sams spoke with Gamasutra the other day, and he called out Microsoft, of all companies, for not supporting innovation in PC gaming. He says that Microsoft's loyalties are split with their console business, and that if they put as much work into developing gaming on the PC as they did on the Xbox 360, everyone would benefit.

An interesting idea, to be sure. It's not like Blizzard necessarily needs help from Microsoft to promote and develop their games -- if anything, it's Microsoft that could probably take a lesson from Blizzard on how to release software. But it's true that console innovations like achievement points and Xbox Live social networking accounts aren't really finding a solid place in the PC gaming world, and it could be that Blizzard wants to see those types of things on the platform.

Blizzard has always had a rocky relationship with consoles anyway, and the recent announcement of a non-console Diablo 3 definitely shows they're interested in the PC (including Mac) platform only. Can't really blame them for wanting a little more love from an OS developer like Microsoft.

WoW Moviewatch: The Scarlet Thorn

For those of you that have complained about Baron Soosdon's music videos that have no plot and are merely a bunch of color filters, this may be a breath of fresh air. The Scarlet Thorn, one of Baron's entries in Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational machinima contest, centers around Lady Sylvanas. While there is no dialogue in this epic movie about beating the Scarlet Crusaders to a bloody pulp, you can expect plenty of action!

Around Azeroth: Onyxia takes in a deep breath

While looking at this picture, it occurs to me that I have no memory of any of this game's dragon bosses besides close-ups of their rear legs. Ah, the joy of being a rogue. Anyway, Callandra of <Ancestors of Exodus> on Mannoroth took this picture of an angry Onyxia two years ago, while he was lying dead at tank Kilsythe's feet. This is definitely Phase 3 -- you can see the confuddled raid members running in fear in the distant background, probably directly into the whelp caves. I miss the 40-mans. You just don't get this kind of mass frustration from the BC raids. Thanks to Callandra for the pic (and the correction on the credit!)

Reader WoWspace of the Week: Absoli

For as many different World of Warcraft players as there are out there, there are equally as many different WoWspaces for people to game in. Each week, we'll bring you a WoWspace sent in by one of our readers and let them tell you all about it. Would you like to share your own personal space? Just drop some pictures and your description to us here at readerwowspace AT gmail.com! This week, we visit the home of Absoli, who has a dark but interesting WoWspace -- and really needs a better camera.

I have several toons, but really now my main is my lvl 70 priest on Duskwood. I spent several years collecting bits and pieces for my setup and thought I'd share it with you all.

WoW Moviewatch: Video Games Live

If you missed the live stream of the 2008 Blizzard Worldwide Invitational closing ceremony, you'll probably be regretting it right about now. They brought back Video Games Live, a group that works with local orchestras and choirs to perform music from video games, to play a montage of Blizzard's greatest music from games such as Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, and WoW. It was so amazing that I immediately bought tickets for VGL's upcoming performance in Austin!

Around Azeroth: The face of terror

I've been doing Around Azeroth for four months or so now, and I've got to say that this screenshot is the most horrifying thing I've been sent so far. (Besides the spam, which yesterday included "Exchange yuor six life," "All the bling-bling you'll ever need," and about two hundred messages in Russian.) I've been trying to hold off on glitch posts, but this one just couldn't wait.

This monster from beyond hell actually spawned from the video card of Milla of Thrall. It's similar to the glitch suffered by the winner of Glitchstravaganza, but much worse. His screen went black for a few seconds, but when it returned, all of the player characters became black shadows, and the NPC skins had been replaced by other textures. In particular, the genial, freckled face of Auctioner Lympkin disappeared. It was replaced by a full-body skin of the face of some monstrous proto-human. Urgh. Would you buy a stack of Netherweave cloth from this man?

WoW Moviewatch: My Name is Nyhm

Nyhm of Hard Like Heroic, Ni Hao and Pretty Fly for a Draenei is back with a rapping parody about that guy we all know. The guy who has nothing better to do than grief other players out of boredom. The one who spams trade channels with nonsense. As with most of Nyhm's work, some content may be NSFW!

[Thanks, Selserene!]

Around Azeroth: A holy place

Considering our recent trend of repeatedly mocking the blood elves, it's high time we showcase some of the nice things our skinny, pointy, pale brethren do with their spare time. For example, instead of draining magic from helpless wyrms or cooking up tauren burgers, At'naed of Sporeggar-EU spends her days hunting down places of spiritual significance.

At'naed's player wrote, "At'naed's life is one long pilgrimage in search of holy places. She may not worship Elune. She may not even believe in the existence of her enemy's deity. But the priestess acknowledges the spiritual significance of a moonwell, and will still stop by to meditate and partake of its spiritual power (after killing any Night Elves that might be beside it, of course)." This particular moonwell is in the poorly-defended town of Stonetalon Peak. Thanks for the submission, At'naed, and enjoy your RP!

WoW Moviewatch: Unstunted, Volume II

(It pains me to even write this, but if maya-rendered "ogre testicles" offend you, do not watch this video.)

In April, I blogged a little gnome ... err, known, machinima called Unstunted Prologue. It was a short clip of a gnome being punted by an ogre. This time around, in Unstunted - Volume II, the gnomes are back for revenge. Indeed, it begins where the last one left off -- where the gnome falls in the tavern.

Macky, the creator of the series, says that this will most likely be the last time that he does a video this long, and we can see why! He exported models from WoW Model Viewer and put them into Maya, made them symmetrical, rigged, and hand keyframed the characters. That's why it comes as no surprise that some shots took over 48 hours to render! The result is an amusing story with a happy ending that you'll just have to see for yourself.

Around Azeroth: The taurrorist

We've been pretty mean to blood elves here at Around Azeroth, so today, we're going to ... continue to be mean to them, actually. (Don't worry, there's a really sweet belf pic coming up tomorrow.) In this screenshot, Zu of <Reforged> on Runetotem has discovered that donning the complete fire festival garb gives him power over fire. And what does he do with that power? Why, burn down Silvermoon City! It's every tauren's dream!

But seriously, he's just chilling on Quel'Danas. The festival garb doesn't give you any powers -- the only thing you get for collecting it all is a worthless Diablo III beta invite. (Note: Do not try this at home! You have been warned!)

Arcane Brilliance: Gearing your Mage for Karazhan

Welcome to another edition of Arcane Brilliance, where our spell hit is capped out, our damage is through the roof, and our crits are frequent and beefy. We're Mages, after all, and absolute power is what we do. Except against that Rogue last night--the one who seemed to be able to pop Cloak of Shadows every 3 seconds or so and never took full damage from anything even though armor-wise, he only seemed to be sporting some kind of ninja mask and a black jumpsuit of dubious fire-retardant value. No, against that particular Rogue, our absolute power amounted to having three of our spells resisted in a row, followed by us blinking away in abject horror, weeping like a child. That's right: fear Mages. We're powerful sorcerers, channeling the profound and unparalleled might of the arcane...unless you resist our spells, in which case we're just guys in dresses waving sticks. Feel free to jab us with something sharp.

Once upon a time, your Mage stumbled blearily out into Azeroth and cast his first Fireball at a kobold or a wolf or something. Then a bunch of other stuff happened, and now you're level 70, and you just bought your flying mount and used it to see how far up you could go before your graphics card stopped rendering the ground. After you screw around a bit, maybe quest out Netherstorm, run Shadow Labyrinth a few times and learn to hate the Blackheart fight, you may find yourself wondering what's next for your green and blue-clad wizard. Perhaps...another color entirely? Wandering aimlessly about Shattrath one day, you notice a fellow spell-slinger clad in a robe you've never seen before. Inspecting her, you are shocked to see the name of the robe is written not in green...or even blue...but purple.

Asking where such a treasure might be obtained, you learn a name that will consume your waking thoughts and haunt your dreams: Karazhan.

Your guild, you learn, frequents the haunted castle that bears this name, and would be happy to take you along...if you can be of some use to them within its shadowed walls. Your current hodgepodge of mismatched quest rewards and 5-man drops simply won't cut it. You must improve yourself, and quickly. But how? Read on, fellow Mages, and find out.
