Behold the power of WoW Insider -- GotGame told us about their browser and social networking service a little while ago, and we were so much more fascinated with the browser part of their app that they split it off. And here it is: Rogue is what they're calling their ingame browser application -- you can download it for free from the site, and after a quick install, you can open up a browser in any PC game.

As lots of commenters said on our last post, this isn't really an ingame browser, it's more of an overlay that lets you browse while playing the game. And all it really does is save you the couple of minutes it would take to tab out and check your own browser (or just run WoW in a windowed mode, and use both at the same time).

But there are a probably a few users out there who would find it really useful. Downtime is the main issue I can think of (though lots of my downtime is filled lately with the Bejeweled addon anyway). But if you've been waiting for a solid, standalone ingame browser to come along (complete with Flash support, which makes it easy to pull up Hulu or Pandora while playing), Rogue is it.
GotGame releases their ingame browser separately originally appeared on WoW Insider on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 14:30:00 EST. The first, seen above, features Steven van Zandt (better known as Silvio Dante on The Sopranos, but also a real-life performer in Bruce Springsteen's band) spouting an old Godfather III reference (that a lot of returning fans are probably saying to themselves after re-entering Warcraft for level 80).

And the second (definitely the more hilarious one) features Ozzy Osbourne as an Undead Warlock having it out with the Lich King over just who's WoW's Prince of Darkness. It's embedded after the break, definitely a must-see. Blizzard's doing terrific already -- their games are setting records, and subscriptions are higher than ever. But it doesn't look like they're taking this holiday season lying down at all.
Continue reading Ozzy Osbourne and Steve Van Sandt in two new TV commercials

Ozzy Osbourne and Steve Van Sandt in two new TV commercials originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 11:40:00 EST. In a (not so) shocking announcement on their website, The Championship Gaming Series revealed that they will be ceasing all operations immediately. The International gaming series, which expanded to every continent except Antarctica this year, is shutting down after only two seasons. The professional gaming league, which aimed to promote eSports in a flashy, televised format, was patterned after professional sports leagues with player drafts, team managers, and city-based teams.

The CGS featured five games during its two seasons, Counter-Strike: Source, Dead or Alive 4, FIFA 07, and Project Gotham Racing for Season 1; with FIFA 08 and Forza Motorsport 2 taking up the latter two slots in Season 2. Although not included in seasonal coverage, the CGS also recently promoted World of Warcraft Arena tournaments, with Europe's Nihilum winning the 2008 Championship. Arenas were also included in the CGS-run College Gaming League. A full statement from the league can be found on their site.
Championship Gaming Series folds originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST. Oh yeah. Ignore the glowing eyes and the runeblade too." />Yeah, it's true. While some people have already pretty much beaten Wrath -- Yes, and I mean all of it -- Some of us haven't quite made it to 80 yet. But really, that's fine. There's a lot of awesome stuff to see in Northrend, and I don't mind stopping to smell the roses and whatnot. As it is, we HAVE to stop now, what with that 5 AM - 11 AM downtime this morning.

But I'm not too bummed about the break in leveling. If I wasn't waiting through downtime, I'd be waiting for the queue to clear up, right? Besides, this is a perfect opportunity to sit back and absorb the information overload from the past week. Here's a selection of some of hottest news from the past week, including quite a few leveling, gearing, and profession guides to give you a head start in Northrend once the servers come back up.

Continue reading Tuesday Morning Post: Singing the I'm not level 80 yet blues

Tuesday Morning Post: Singing the I'm not level 80 yet blues originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 07:30:00 EST. CodeWeaver has confirmed that their CrossOver Games system-compatability product will continue to support World of Warcraft, even if your account includes Wrath of the Lich King. You don't even have to upgrade to a new CrossOver build. The current 7.10 version will run Wrath "just peachy," says CodeWeaver's COO John Parshall.

According to the press release we recieved from CodeWeaver, Parshall apparantly did most of the Wrath "testing" himself. "I played well into my mid-70s on several of my characters," said Parshall. Like 99% of the WoW population, the COO also played a Death Knight to about level 60. So, you can rest confidently knowing your Death Grip is totally okay with Linux. The press release obviously didn't say whether he tanked or not, but I'm going to assume a Linux guru has the skills to pay the bills, as it were.

CrossOver's web site does warn that there may be a few small problems, but that the game runs smoothly and exceedingly well. It comes just shy of running "flawlessly." Given that the COO of the company seems to be a devoted fan, you can assume that any serious problems will be worked out soon enough.

A screenshot and a quick Armory check shows that Dessembrae of Mazrigos-EU is quite possibly the world's first Level 80 Death Knight. Unless proven otherwise, Dessembrae earned the feat at around 19:00 CET. Deathknight.info, the resource for all things Death Knight, reports the achievement after making a call-out to all Death Knight enthusiasts. It appears that Dessembrae overtook Arello, whose Death Knight reportedly hit 70 ahead of everyone else.

It's quite apparent that the early launch of the game in European realms proved to be too much of a hurdle for US realm-based players as most major achievements were obtained by European players such as the first player to Level 80, and even the mastery of all current PvE content. With most world first and realm first Achievements getting snapped up, it looks as though it'll soon be time for most players to settle into a more comfortable groove. That is, um, maybe actually enjoying the scenery.
World first Level 80 Death Knight? originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Nov 2008 15:00:00 EST. Just an hour ago, we reported that über mutant guild conglomerate TwentyFifthNovember, a merger of two of the world's bleeding edge guilds -- SK Gaming and Nihilum -- beat the 'entry-level' raid of Naxxramas. This was fast, although not entirely unexpected considering that Naxxramas was an old-world raid that was retuned for 25-man (and 10-man) content. However, TwentyFifthNovember's website reports that they have also defeated Malygos, currently the end, and supposedly most difficult, boss of current Wrath of the Lich King content (Icecrown and Arthas will be accessible in a future patch). Their website says 'soon...' but I didn't take that to mean 'right now'.

This means that within three days of the game's launch, a guild has leveled to max level (although some members of the raid were below 80) and defeated all available raid content. While Blizzard has admitted to tuning the game to become more accessible to more players, or a more casual audience, TwentyFifthNovember's defeat of all PvE content available in the current game brings into question just how tuned down PvE content has become. It will be interesting to see how long it will take another Guild to clear through all of Northrend. Congratulations, TwentyFifthNovember! You can now all go an play Guitar Hero. Or something.
TwentyFifthNovember beats all Wrath PvE content originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Nov 2008 14:30:00 EST. How long has it been since the game launched? Two, three days? It was news when French player Nymh power-leveled his way to 80, but barely a day after that... guess what? Naxxramas has been cleared. This feat was achieved by TwentyFifthNovember, the newly merged SK-Gaming and Nihilum über-guild of Magtheridon-EU. The two bleeding edge guilds have had the most combined world first achievements of any guild and their clearing 25-man Naxxramas is almost expected.

What's not quite expected is how soon they achieved it. I know Blizzard already said that there would no longer be any raid dungeons as hard as Sunwell Plateau, but this is somewhat ridiculous. I mean, getting to Level 80 is one thing, but clearing the first 25-man raid before the weekend is over? Did Blizzard make it too easy? Are they really just that good? Or do the rest of the world just... suck? It's greatly impressive but somehow also seems to leave me with a feeling that the game is just a little less fun now. Just a little. Congratulations to TwentyFifthNovember! It's a phenomenal feat -- but it looks like their Guild name stands for something else, though. I wonder what they will have cleared by November 25?
Naxxramas world first by TwentyFifthNovember originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Nov 2008 12:30:00 EST. If you decided to skip on the midnight launches that happened all over the world, or if you managed to resist the urge to go out and buy the game soon after launch, leaving you as one of the few (and perhaps proud) last bastions of anti-Lich Kingdom... maybe it's time to give in. Blizzard has now made direct online upgrades to Wrath of the Lich King available on their website. It's not easy to find, as the option is hidden away in the account management page, and the Buy The Game button on their splash page still leads to the outdated, unhelpful Preorder page. We at WoW Insider are going to do a public service and make it easy for you to upgrade. Just click on the picture above.

This is great news for players unable to secure the game through regular channels, as some stores in other countries have reported trouble stocking the game. The direct online upgrade is also an affordable option as it does away with any shipping costs or related sales taxes by area -- for the most part, anyway, as some states will still get charged a tax. For exactly $39.99 and a roughly 1.7Gb download (if your account is already upgraded to The Burning Crusade), you too can be joining your friends in the cold of Northrend.

This is also a welcome move from Blizzard, who made online upgrades to vanilla and The Burning Crusade comparatively late after those games launched. That the direct online upgrade appears mere days after the game's launch is somewhat surprising but progressive, indicating that Blizzard only wanted to ensure attendance during the worldwide events. I reckon that if this option had been available on launch day, we'd have had pretty empty stores. Now, where'd I put my credit card...

[UPDATE: Please note that some readers have sent in feedback that using the online upgrade service results in an error, so we'd advise to proceed with caution for the meantime. You can learn more about the errors on this thread at the official forums.]
[UPDATED] Online upgrades to Wrath now available originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Nov 2008 12:00:00 EST. We'll start off with this rep piece -- if you're Alliance and need a ranged weapon and a rep to grind, Vanguard is a good place to start.

Name: Sawed-off Hand Cannon (Wowhead, Thottbot, Allakazham)
Type: Rare Gun
Damage/Speed: 208-386 / 3.10 (95.8 DPS)
Abilities:

+17 Agility, +27 Stamina. Not too shabby at all.

And it even gives you +18 hit rating, which is extra nice (by 78 you've hopefully already reached your hit cap, whatever that is, but putting it on the gun and off of your other gear will allow for a little more flexibility. It's an all-round good gun on your way up to 80 -- there will certainly be better but for the rep, which you'll probably get sleepwalking through Howling Fjord, it's a new reward.

Congratulations to Nymh of EU Drek'thar on your achievement! Nymh's Armory displays her (him?) as an SL/SL Warlock, which I've been told is an exceptionally good grinding spec, especially when coupled with a healer. Judging by her buffs in the full screenshot, it looks like she just may have had a pocket healer on the journey to 80. A Discipline Priest, specifically. Whether the Priest was there the whole way through or just happened to be partied with Nymh at that moment, we're not really sure.

That screenshot also seems to be from the Grizzly Hills, which is roughly a mid-70s zone. Nymh may have dinged 80, but she still has plenty of content ahead. I hope the trek to 80 was an enjoyable one! How long until you start leveling your alts, Nymh?

[via MMO-Champion]
Nymh of EU Drek'thar first to level 80 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 21:20:00 EST. Queues are the highest most of us have ever seen tonight. On my home server of Eldre'Thalas I was behind over 850 people at one point, and have had over an hour wait be estimated for me more often than not. I maxed out at 115 minutes.

The estimated wait time will fluctuate back and forth depending on the frequency in which players log off or leave the queue in frustration.

Perhaps the biggest thing we need to worry about this expansion is not server down time, but the phenomenal amount of players wanting to get in the game.

If Blizzard has any announcement about this, or solutions (other than transferring realms) we'll keep you updated here. Other than that... good luck getting in.
The World (of Warcraft) is full, please come back later originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 21:15:00 EST.

Al'Akir -> Bladefist

Burning Legion -> Chromaggus

Frostmane -> Laughing Skull

Grim Batol -> Genjuros

Kazzak -> Karazhan

Magtheridon -> Emeriss

Neptulon -> Shattered Halls

Outland -> Auchindoun

Ravencrest -> Spinebreaker

Stormreaver -> Burning Blade

Stormscale -> Boulderfirst

Sylvanas -> Jaedenar

Twilight's Hammer -> Vek'nilash

Argent Dawn -> Darkmoon Faire

They will be open from today, the 13th, until Wednesday, November 18th.

This is really not your typical character transfer here. Usually there's a group of source realms with one destination realms, sometimes two. I'm not sure I've ever seen something like this: 14 source realms with 14 different destination realms. This may have to do with the more fractured situation in Europe - with four realm types (PvE, PvP, RP, RP-PvP), five languages, and I'm not sure how many time zones, I can see how it might take some juggling to keep moves within one category. As always, if you do want to switch, you're advised to do it early, because transfers can be closed if the realms meet their desired populations early.

Edit: I see that all of these realms are English and CEST (thanks, Sethox). No clue why they're so fragmented, then.

Many free transfers for Europe originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 20:00:00 EST. Papa's got a brand new blog. If papa were our favorite World of Warcraft database, that is. Wowhead recently announced a new feature on their site to coincide with the release of the Wrath of the Lich KIng, a blog dedicated to our favorite game. The blog will be written by the people behind Wowhead, to serve as a sneak peek into the people behind the game and the site. Malgayne writes that they'll "also be posting theorycrafting essays, weekly discussion topics, WoW news and maybe even a hardware review or two."

This is great news for everyone as Wowhead just keeps on getting better (kind of like, ahem, a certain World of Warcraft blog), and a better Wowhead is always a better gaming experience for everyone. You can always visit the blog page or subscribe to it through the RSS feed. There isn't much on it for now -- it's just the announcement post -- but expect the spot to fill up with some excellent reading material.
Wowhead launches new blog feature originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 17:30:00 EST. In what might be the most welcome -- or disturbing, depends on how you want to look at it -- news to World of Warcraft players looking forward to more character customization, Blizzard dropped hints at possible gender and race changes as a paid service feature. About a month back, some folks dug up a paid character customization button hidden away in the Wrath of the Lich King files, hinting at the possibility of a new service. Lead Producer J. Allan Brack explained that it was in the plans for the future but Blizzard hadn't set a price or extent of the customization at the time.

WoW Insider's resident RP maestro David Bowers was thrilled at the possibility of more character customization than just hairstyles, but it seems that there might even be more than that. Eurogamer's interview with Blizzard's Paul Sams and Lee Sparks revealed that the technology to do such changes is taking some time and energy to put into place. They point out that the monetary barrier is merely in place to prevent players from abusively changing their characters' features constantly. Sams said that Blizzard "think(s) that it's important to have some consistency in the game, we don't want people changing their look and feel every day."

If this feature pushes through, it will add to an extensive menu of character customization options, from paid name changes to in-game barbershops, as well as realm transfers (even the once-unthinkable PvE-to-PvP transfers). The feature would allow players to undo some decisions they later grew to regret. According to Sams, "when you create your character, often times you wish you'd done things differently. You wish you were on a different realm, you wish you'd had a different name or you wish you'd chosen a different look and feel to your character." This hints at the possibility of race and even gender changes, which should pretty much open up every available customization option for players.

Via Massively
Gender reassignment and race reroll coming to Azeroth? originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 13:00:00 EST. Just a quick note here for our readers who are lined up (or are planning to line up) at a GameStop: we're getting reports that GameStop stores are having serious issues with credit cards at the moment, and according to Adam Holisky, a number of people are being turned away or asked to bring cash in order to pay for the game. So far we've confirmed that the issue is occuring at GameStops in Madison, Fargo, Las Vegas, and Kansas City. We haven't heard about any issues occurring at other stores' midnight releases, so for the moment we're assuming that the issues are specific to GameStop's system and they're aware of the problem.

So, just as an FYI if you've reserved a copy at a GameStop, you may want to bring enough cash with you to cover the game's cost just in case yours is one of the affected stores. I'll update this post as more information becomes available.

UPDATE: Yep -- from both comments here and emails we've received, it's pretty apparent that it's a nationwide issue for GameStop. Credit card authorization has to be done manually so things are, as one of our readers has put it, "taking forever." Take cash, folks.
GameStop having credit card issues originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 01:15:00 EST. But Nethaera posted this on the general forums tonight without any promoting from the users.

"To ensure a smooth transition to Wrath of the Lich King, we recommend that players who have newly upgraded their accounts, log into the game and log out completely for a short period of time in order for their account to fully update."

So what does that mean? Does it mean I have to be logged out for the game to update? I would think that would be a "duh" kind of thing. But what I'm taking from it is the following steps:

Upgrade Account to Wrath

Log in

/dance

Log out

???

Log in and go to Northend

My guess is that some internal variables in the game need to be reset upon logging in, and those variables might affect other login processes, so you have to "restart" more or less.

Either way, it's good information that should go out to the masses.
Blizzard says to log out and then back in to ensure an upgrade originally appeared on WoW Insider on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 21:20:00 EST. Not that anyone is level 80 yet, and not that you can actually post in the forums. But they're there and we have compiled them into a gallery for your easy viewing pleasure.

I like the Alliance ones the best. Some of the Horde ones seem rather underwhelming.

The forums recently underwent an upgrade to Wrath of the Lich King graphics, and are now all nice and icy blue. The zombies even invaded the forums for a brief time, but it seem they have been driven back.
