Getting a moth pet as a low-level Hordie

- Get yourself to Auberdine (Darkshore). If you're like me, this means running from Orgrimmar, but at least I got to pick up some flight paths along the way.
- Swim out to the very end of Auberdine's dock, where the boat to Azuremyst docks. Position yourself right under the tip of the dock, and then drown (as close to the surface as you can).
- Run your ghost out on the dock, stand at the end of it, and wait for the boat to show up. Do not resurrect yet.
- When the boat arrives, run onto it (still in ghost form), quickly climb the back stairs, and carefully walk out onto the rope that stretches towards the front of the ship (see screenshot above). Now resurrect. You will be in combat, but nobody will run up to the rope to attack you. Now just don't move until the boat gets to Azuremyst.
- When you get to Azuremyst you should be able to jump straight into the water, thereby avoiding combat. Now would be a good time to turn on your Track Humanoids if you're interested in finding a Blood Elf Bandit for the coveted mask. Make your way east towards Ammen Vale, where new Draenei start, being careful to avoid Azure Watch.
- Unfortunately, you're going to have to die some more. There are high-level guards in the pass into Ammen Vale; I couldn't think of any way to get through besides corpse-running. But it only took two deaths, so I wasn't too bothered.
- Just past the guards, you should find what you came for: Vale Moths. They're level 1, so you should have absolutely no trouble training one, and then you can simply hearth out. Enjoy your awesome new pet!
Three deaths in all (probably more if you're on a PvP server); not too bad, considering. The family skill for moths is Serenity Dust. I was initially worried about putting it on auto-cast, but it looks like the pet AI is smart enough to not use it until the moth is down by enough health that the HoT is actually useful. With Dust once a minute, I may never cast Mend Pet again in the course of normal questing.

Alternatively, while you are there you can grab a kurken, assuming you're willing to wait in line for a bit.

Or a Ravager. I went there at level 11 to get my Ravager as my first pet. I think I'll make the trip back there now to get the Kurken though! I'll make the trip late at night though.

Just an FYI - the Kurken is an exotic and can only be tamed if you have Beast Mastery (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=53270) which is only available at level 60. I found this out last night with my lvl 37 hunter and was rewarded with an angry Kurken and the words, "Cannot be tamed".

There are also different colored moths on Bloodmyst Isle, a bit of a walk to the north. I believe they start in the mid-teens.

they may have changed this, but back in the day, you could just walk the ghost onto the boat and wait for it to depart without ever rezzing. Once it passed though the splash screen, you'd be alive again on the other side. Guards may still kill you on the other side, but you're going to end up at a graveyard on azuremyst isle at that point.

There are moths on bloodmyst isle that might be easier to get to then the ones in ammen vale, but I don't know if they're tameable . . . anyone else know?

The Bloodmyst moths are not tameable, sadly; I think they look much better.

How odd that some of the moths are tamable and others aren't.

It is kind of disappointing that the ones on Bloodmyst Isle aren't tameable. There are moths in Netherstorm with the same skin, but obviously those aren't exactly available to low level hunters.

I just love how people try to find ways to cheat the game. In the least, this is certainly not in the spirit of World of Warcraft, you have to admit. How pathetic!

Don't be an asshat. It isn't "Cheating" the game. It is being creative and putting in the time and effort for something unique. The moths are there for anyone to grab. They aren't faction specific. But you DO have to work a little harder if you are a Horde to get it.

How is sneaking your way onto a ship and into the draenei area not in the "spirit" of WoW? Alliance can get to the blood elf area fairly easily in plaguelands....
Sounds like something horde would do in my opinion.
So I don't think it's pathetic at all.

Horde hunters have been taking the boat to get to Darnassus to tame low level owls since the very early days of WoW. If that sort of thing were against the 'spirit of the World of Warcraft' then Blizzard would've taken steps to stop it.
It's really no different from Alliance hunters going up to tame lynxes up in Eversong Woods.

I could see why you'd think it was cheating as Horde aren't suppose to be on Alliance ships, however I'd like to hear of a better way for Horde to get these pets... care to suggest one?

My19 twink NELF hunter has the Rake. Back when I rolled him the cats had different stats and that was THE twink pet to have. Everyone on Alliance that wanted a 19 twink went to Thunder Bluff to get it. I fail to see how enduring extra time and imminent death is cheating or pathetic!

Were moths never tameable? Because I could have sworn I saw someone with one once while leveling...

Moths just became tamable this patch, I'm pretty sure.

You're probably thinking of the non-combat pet:

I was thinking the same thing until I remembered that it was also bright blue, whereas the blue moths aren't tameable.
