Breakfast Topic: I like gold
If you're the type of player that always wants to be prepared, this pre-Wrath/3.0 period is a pretty good time to get started on that. The big thing most of these types are concerned with is gold. It's more or less been proven to be true that even if you're completely broke going into Wrath, you'll be just fine in the end regardless. Still, gold is on a lot of people's minds looking towards the future.Everyone has a different opinion of how much gold is 'enough' gold. I tend to hang out with players that are pretty big on min-maxing, the people that are always prepared, so my sense of what's 'enough' is a bit inflated. I'm sitting on roughly 10,000 gold right now, and I only recently started feeling like it was 'enough.' I'll be hemorrhaging gold at level 80 leveling professions and getting my gear up to par, so I'm sure most of that will be gone in no time. I could also get the gold very, very easily once I've hit level 80, and not have any issues. I just had that urge to be extra prepared that wasn't sated until I hit 5 digits. It actually wasn't too hard to get. I just farmed herbs here and there, and it just sort of accumulated.
How much gold do you think is enough gold, especially when we're heading into an expansion? Are you content to sit down in the single digits, and go out and run a daily quest if you need to repair your armor? Do you gather up as much gold as possible and sit on it?

Personally I'm sitting on 4500g at the moment but I intend to raise it to 6000-7000g just to be prepared for the Death Knight.

Sitting at about 28k right now, with 11 Giganatic Bags in the bank, 40 Flask of Relentless Assault, and about 30 other items that is going to help my DK level faster.
50k is the goal.

This poll dramatically under-represents the 40k+ gold crowd.

Currently between two main bank accounts I'm sitting on roughly 55,000g - with maybe another 10,000g invested or loaned out right now. (I'm sure guild banks are little bloated by now too if ours is any gauge.)
My early goal for RotLK was 100,000g. I don't think I'll quite make that now. The market seems to have cooled a lot, just as it did leading up to the expansion to BC.
Consensus among folks I've talked with seems to be that most are afraid the new gear for 71 green tags will blow away all the 70 gear they have worked so hard (and paid so much) for. I suppose nobody who thinks that wants to get caught buying a multi-Kg purple one day or even one month before, only to have it replace by the first quest in the starting area of Wrath.

100,000 gold? WTH are you going to do with that much gold? you wouldn't need anywhere near that to level and gear up 20 toons, let alone a sole DK

I can think of several things I'd do with that much gold when the expansion hits.
Talk about motivation to grind out some cash, time to get to work!

As with many things economy related, it depends heavily on your realm and allegiance. Some realms with lots of farmers will have depressed prices and not require much gold, and realms that are more action oriented will require way more gold....

Agreed, the poll needs to go higher! I'm sitting on 24k in anticipation of ridiculous material costs.

Gathering professions FTW!
I'm at ~500G right now, but plan on sapping up as much as possible from what will be the most bloated herb/ore market seen in the game.
Heres a poll I want to see:
"How much gold are you prepared to pay for a stack of WotLK herb/ore?"

What!?! Over 9000!?! That's impossible!
Actually, I found it hard to actually keep the gold I tried to farm, usually being the one to actually spend it on herbs for alchemy and what-not. Saving up anything higher than, oh, 3 digits, is something I just can't do. As a healer in a raiding guild that finds himself without time and support farming for mats, you can understand how easy it is to pump away your hard earned money on necessary potions, only to waste it all on a huge time-dump of a raid party where half the players are insincere about trying to be successful and focused. Farming for gold or mats after is frustrating, especially after a wipe.

I am currently sitting on 130k, and yes, that's more than I'll ever need.

I'm no fan of gold sellers, but if I were sitting on 130k gold I'd be tempted to liquidate some into beer tokens. If the gold spammer prices are anything to go by that's at least £1,300/$2000.

Tempting as that may be, selling gold will slow down my goal of hitting the 214k gold cap by the end of this year. Call me silly, but I want to do, legitimately, something few people have done. Since I'll never down Illidan or KJ, I'll settle for a more reasonable goal (for me).

Sitting between 130-140k myself, also want to hit gold cap. But if WotLK comes out before that happens, I'm going to switch my time to leveling my toons and professions instead.
Sure, that amount isn't needed for anything, but it's something I can work towards on a casual schedule, unlike arenas and raiding.

I seem to be hovering around 2K all the time.
Anytime i get more, i spend it on something (alts, raid consumables, etc) until I drop to like 1500, then the alarm bells ring, I do a few dailies, get it back up to 2K, spend it again, alarm bells, dailies, spend, ...
