WoW movie poster contest winners announced
Worldofwar.net announced the winners of its WoW movie poster contest today. Each winner of the contest received a Wrath of the Lich King beta key. The five winning posters, oddly, have a very sci-fi feel to them. Two of the winners, in particular, gave me a Star Wars vibe. One shows a cast of Alliance characters posed in a fashion reminiscent of Luke and Leia on the A New Hope posters and the other (pictured to the right) reminds me of an Imperial Star Destroyer on the move. Maybe it's just me, but I expected a poster to have more of a fantasy feel to sell this movie. Something that reminds me more of, say, Lord of the Rings rather than Star Wars.I think my favorite one is the one of Arthas staring at the viewer. It looks menacing and the artwork is fantastic. (Not a big fan of the "2012," teaser date, though.) In addition to viewing the winning designs, you can also flip through a gallery of all the entries they received, including a nice one in the honorable mention category called "There is no escape," featuring Kil'jaeden which definitely has a fantasy vibe to it.

Hey it'd be really cool if anyone who put "THE MOVIE" into the title had been automatically disqualified.
Am I alone here? Anyone else think that totally cheaps-up a movie? Makes me think it's aiming pretty low.
"World of Warcraft The Movie" is the worst of the bunch.

They look like parody posters to me.

There are a few that are... "meh" that just look like they took some picture and pasted it on and some are zoomed in too much that they look too pixely. While there are a few others that are really great. I myself prefer the "Gnomeregan Strikes Back" poster.

"The Orcs are not demons. They were just a part in the game of demons."
Wha...? This one gets the Honorary Ralph Wiggum Award.
I'd say it's a 50/50 split between somewhat well designed posters and absolute stinkers.
"I think my favorite one is the one of Arthas staring at the viewer."
Someone lifted fan art from the official site and plopped "2012" down with the first font in the list that comes with Photoshop Elements. Total time spent "designing": 2 minutes.

Awwww what the hell, why wasn't I told about this contest? I am a professional graphic designer I could have destroyed all of those contestants.... sigh.. Does anyone know about other beta key contests like this one?

Yeah seriously... They really need to look at where they plop down their text on most of those... as well as using low quality images and... well, a lot of other problems...
Only a handful would really be considered good, with another handful being funny, and the rest being a waste of the creators time...

Isn't the picture shown that looks like an Imperial Star Destroyer, actually a blurry, reversed Arthas holding Frostmourne out in front of him?

Yes, it is, and I can't get myself to see anything else in it, to be honest. Maybe my screen is brighter than others?

I too think the chosen winners were not exactly the best ones.
And I too think the Gnomeregan one is wonderful.

I'm going to have to go with the general consensus that the winners were poor picks. Collaging together previously created art can work in some instances but when people obviously go to the trouble of creating unique things for a contest entry, they should be at the head of the pack.
Wish I'd known about this contest. I could have had fun with a design for this.
