Ask a Beta Tester: Aurora borealis and paladin tanking

I may have mentioned this before, but I just have to say it again. Northrend is gorgeous. Gorgeous in a way that puts the rest of the game to shame. Just when you thought you'd seen all the good there was to see in Azeroth and Outland, Blizzard comes along and drops Northrend in our lap and makes everything we saw before look a bit plain and dull. Let's start off today with a question about Northrend's look:
grravie asked....
Northrend is an arctic zone. Will there be aurora borealis in the northern night sky?
A similar glow effect exists in Northrend's Howling Fjord zone. It appears there day and night throughout the sky.
For more on of your questions -- and our answers -- read on! But if you're the sort who wants to avoid spoilers, turn back now. We're aiming to avoid major story spoilers, but this feature is all about beta content and we can't talk about the beta without giving a few things away.Arkhill asked....
When you get a beta invite, do you use our own character, or a pre-made one?
There are no pre-mades in the beta -- the beta servers are populated by characters copied from the live realms.
If its your character from live, do you keep the XP and gear you gained in beta when WotLK goes live?
Though Blizzard hasn't explicitly said, my guess is no. Just like the PTRs, the beta realms are for testing. Things can change radically day to day -- even the amount of experience required to level! It wouldn't really be fair to give beta testers a leg up on the rest of the players.
Bylak asked....
What's the status of real-time weather in Northrend? Will we have clear days, snowy days, blizzards, rain, or anything like that?
At present, there's no real-time weather in Northrend. Or at least, if there is, it's subtle enough that those of us here at WoW Insider haven't been able to notice it.
Bart asked....
Now that Blizzard is looking at making Paladin tanking less reactive, how will this affect Paladin tank solo grinding? Are we still doing as much damage to enemies that hit us, we just rely less on it for threat?
Retribution Aura, Blessing of Sanctuary, and Holy Shield all still exist -- so your standard issue tankadin will still be doing plenty of damage (and thus threat) to anything that's hitting them. However, the changes to the judgement system will allow Paladins to take a bit more of an active role in directly attacking their opponent -- you know, something more than hitting seal, judge, seal, judge whenever the cooldowns are up. (For those of you just trying to catch up, seals now last for 2 minutes, regardless of how many times you judge them; Seal of the Crusader is gone, and its damage bonus has been rolled into the base spells; and seals and judgements are no longer tied together, so you could seal righteousness for the bonus holy damage and judge wisdom for the mana regeneration debuff.) There's also a new ability, Shield of Righteousness, that will also provide damage and threat when used.
I don't think either of those will make a big difference for soloing, however. At this point, Paladins are still your best option if there's AoE tanking to be done and you'll still find Protection Paladins grinding away a half dozen mobs at a time in the right places. The new judgement system and Shield of Righteousness give us more options when we're forced to take mobs on one at a time, but because of reflective damage, it's still going to be faster to fight more than one at a time if you have the option to do so.
I've read that the new quests will try to explain the story somewhat, going away from the "Collect 20 pig snouts" variety. Is this true? Are the quests more diverse than what we've had before?
Though you'll certainly run into the same "kill X number of Y" type quests, the quest chains I've seen thus far in Northrend do a pretty good job of setting the stage. You and the rest of your faction have traveled to Northrend to fight off the Lich King and his minions. And even when your quests are mundane, they all seem to revolve around that story, even from the start.

"Though Blizzard hasn't explicitly said, my guess is no."
Blizzard actually does state it in the Beta FAQ. ;-)

"Q: Will the progress characters make on the beta carry over to the live game?
A: No. Progress made by characters on beta realms will not be transferred back to characters on the live realms when Wrath of the Lich King is released."

Superintendent Chalmers: Good lord, what is happening in there?
Principal Skinner: Aurora Borealis?
Chalmers: Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized, entirely within your kitchen?
Skinner: Yes.
Chalmers: May I see it?
Skinner: No.
Agnes: Seymour! The house is on fire!
Skinner: No, Mother, it's just the Northern Lights.

This may not be far along into the Beta, But I like the way the SSO quest givers and guards say flattering things to you after you hit exalted.I think little extra levels of flavor like this really add to the game.It would be cool if you had a poor standing with a group that they would call you names and try to taunt you into attacking.
Any hint of more "fluff" NPC interactions to come in Northrend?

What kind of restrictions does Blizz put in to prevent people from flying over water too far? Still fatigue? Or something new?

Any ideas or info on what the world event is going to be that kicks off the expansion if there even is one? Any clues in the starter quests?

Lately, I have been leveling a batch of alts and it is exasperating to find quest chains that end with a dungeon quest. Not too big of a deal since I can just skip the last one, except thats where the better gear comes from and I'm left with something unfinished.
Do Wrath quest chains mostly end with dungeon quests?

Since in BC, and even more so in Wrath (apparently) the lore of zones and the purpose of the factions therein all usually revolve around a dungeon that is the source/cause of most of the trouble and activity in a zone, it makes sense for all of the quest chains to be climactic and end in an instance.

I just use guidebooks and wowhead to find the dungeons in my level range and the quests for them, and then only do the quests that feed into those chains.
After that, only tend to need a few more Qs here and there, at least before Outlands, to level out of that 'bracket'.

I'm wondering if you have seen the Warlock's Metamorphosis in action. Is it a PvP or a PvE skilland how strong is it?

Why wouldn't there be weather in Northrend? That be just plain stupid! Even Outland had weather...surley it is just not implemented in the game yet. I mean, it has to be snowing somewhere, and im sure blizzards are common too! Plus, rain would be perfect for the Howling Fljord, Sholazar Basin, and places like that.

Do we get to see Hemet Nesingwary do some big game hunting in Northrend and if so, who did he leave in charge of the Nagrand Expedition?

Tell me about Old Stratholme. Do you know with who we will gain reputation? A new faction? Or no faction?
Thank you.
