Phat Loot Phriday: Torch of the Damned

Name: Torch of the Damned (Wowhead, Thottbot, Retribution)
Type: Epic Two-hand Mace
Damage/Speed: 396-595 / 3.80 (130.4 DPS)
Abilities:
- +51 Strength, +45 Stamina
- Improves crit strike rating by 38, improves haste rating by 50.
- Great for Paladins, and any other class that uses weapon damage for certain abilities. Warning: this gets into some deep math, and you guys know I'm bad at that, so expect to see some more number crunching in the comments. Basically, Seal of Command, a Ret Pally talent, gives a chance to add 70% of the weapon's damage to any normal attacks, and since most weapons trade off speed for damage (as in, the slower the weapon, the higher the damage), slow weapons are better -- you'll get more damage output when SoC procs. And since this weapon is very slow and very powerful, you'll get more damage overall out of Seal of Command.
- The Haste rating is also good for Paladins, not because it will help with Seal of Command (SoC is a procs-per-minute talent, so no matter how many times you hit, you can't get it to proc more often), but because it'll let you hit more often, which means more white damage. Any class that benefits from big swing damage (Windfury is awesome when it procs with a huge weapon like this) will love this mace.
- Oh, and anytime we mention a two-handed weapon, Matthew Rossi's eyebrow twitches until we mention Titan's Grip. Imagine seeing a Warrior wielding this baby... and something else at the same time. Yeah.
Getting Rid of It: You probably won't, for a while. But it does disenchant into a Void Crystal, and vendors will buy it back for 18g 43s 86c

My favorite weapon of the expansion, and something I'd like to own...
...By the way, lil' correction: If a Retadin is using Command, then it's Alliance (Damn belves and their superior racial seal), and Command benefits very little from haste as compared to Blood, making the stat largely an afterthought when gearing.

Love the look of this weapon, and seeing as we just got our first RoS kill the other night, we should see one soon. Although, as a Resto shaman, I'll never get one, but I can dream.
One thing it makes me wonder about, is how many guilds will come back to BT in WoTLK to get their Death Knights geared up. WotLK greens won't be an immediate replacement for all your current epics, so I'm thinking maybe BT/Hyjal/Sunwell won't become the ghost towns that BWL/AQ40/Naxx did.

RoS reminds me more of "Sun of a Gun" from Chrono Cross, that one boss that would change faces and do different abilities based on the face.

No love for warriors!?!??! What about the enhance shamans that give you more AP (Strength of Earth and Unleashed Rage), Crit (Grace of Air) and swings with extra AP (Windfury obviously twisted with GoA).??? Plus we doo some substantial dps of our own (put many a lock to shame on RoS as enh shaman)
You guys would be nothing without us

Ain't there a phase in RoS where casting a spell causes some nasty feedback damage?
Bit of a setback for casters if so.

Felspawn's Schramm-hate-meter seems to be working full steam. Too bad his sarcasm meter is failing.

You forgot to mention Seal of Blood. Paladins love this thing Hordeside.

It's itemised for ret paladins hordeside - cataclysm's edge is the equivalent for arms warriors and alliance paladins. Not to say it isn't better; but that's because of it's level, not its itemisation.

I'm not sure about Cataclysm's Edge being better itemized than Torch of the Damned for Alliance.
CE has a 3.5 speed.
TotD has a 3.8 speed (and a higher damage range than CE). The haste on TotD drops it to a 3.7.
I could be wrong about this though (I play a BE, and a Prot one at that.)

Blackcat,
Weaponspeed does not affect how manytimes SoC will proc. What your looking for as an Alliance Ret Pally is the weapon with the highest top end damage to make the best use of Seal of Command and Crusader Strike.
Slow weapons generally have the highest top end damage, although th sword that drops of Kil'Jaeden is faster than this it's top end damage is similar or higher, making it better.

Adding onto my point, Kil'jaeden's sword would better a hell of a lot more powerful if it was 3.80 speed, but it would likely be so powerful that you'd see all the top arena teams wanting it for there Warriors.
Which would be interesting. 20k gold for a bear. How much for this awesomesauce sword?

"Weaponspeed does not affect how manytimes SoC will proc."
Yes and no.
SoC is PPM. It takes the weapons speed and the PPM rate and calculates a % chance per hit based on the average # of hits to get the PPM rate. Normally this would mean the weapon speed is unimportant.
Crusader Strike does not get added into this and uses this same rate. The result is that every 6 seconds you are getting an extra chance to proc SoC. The slower the weapon is, the higher % chance that SoC will have during Crusader Strike. It effectively increases the PPM rate more if the weapon is slower.
So slower weapons favor SoC just because of Crusader Strike.

Angus,
Whilst that may be the case, the fact is that SoC will almost always go off 7 times in a minute. Slower, harder hitting attacks will gain more benefit of the extra damage of the proc, and Crusader Strike will do more damge by itself.
Slow hard hitting weapon choices are nothing to do with proc-rate, just maximising damage output.

If that was the case, warriors wouldn't care which hand they put executioner on.
Instant attacks favor slow weapons for 2 reasons.
More damage per hit
PPM procs are increased.
