Wowhead turns 2
Everyone's favorite -- well, mine at least -- World of Warcraft database, Wowhead, celebrates its second anniversary this June 26. The database, which originally started as a talent calculator that is reputed to have inspired how the official site's own talent calculators look, was launched in June 2006. Since its inception, Wowhead has steadily grown its features, from small things such as patch annotations and embedded tooltips to big and fancy things like stat weightings and 3D models and characters.
To celebrate, they're holding a contest and a raffle, giving away cool gaming goodies from X-Keys every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to the main prizes of a top-of-the-line video card, a 24-inch flatscreen LCD monitor, and a custom-built gaming PC. Head on over to wowhead, register (if you haven't already), and give them some Happy Birthday loving. The promotion runs for two weeks starting today, but before you get all excited with the prizes, be sure to see if you're eligible. If, for instance, you're from Asia like me, the best you can do is have some cake and ice cream to celebrate on their behalf.

What is it that makes it so dificult for websites like wowhead and wowinsider to include people from outside the US in their contests?

Have you ever listened to the WoWInsider podcast? They've explained there that its miles of paperwork JUST to do it in the US. They would have to spend 10's of thousands of dollars in legal fees and research to ensure the contest was legal wherever else they allowed it to take place. And every country has different laws regarding contests and sweepstakes like Canada not allowing contests where no skill is involved. You cant just give something away up there.

Well we wouldn't have to spend that much, but yeah it's a legal thing. Every country's rules are different, and to let things happen in other countries, our lawyers would have to jump through a lot of hoops.
Not that we don't do contests in other countries -- whenever possible we open up our contests worldwide. But it's not as easy as doing a contest in the US, and even that comes with some legal tangles.

This contest is more like a bribe to get people to give the site hits and give more useful comments which improve the site overall. It's more like a commission than a contest. It reminds me of online gambling sites that have prizes for those who bet the most over a week period. At the school I went to, a team of players used the same account 24/7 playing blackjack in order to win. Maybe some people will be smart enough to do the same here.

I'd love to pick up the 20-key Xkeys pad for when my 1st gen G15 finally dies on me, but $120 is obscene! Guess I'll buy a G11 and miss the LCD screen :(
