It seems to be an unfortunate reality of WoW, if not MMORPGs in general: When a new patch goes live, more often than not, it's going to be a bit rocky on the servers for a while. Patch 2.4.2 is no exception, Many servers are having trouble staying up, including most of the Ruin Battlegroup, which according to a few our tipsters has been having more than its share of trouble lately. Blue Poster Vrakthis has assured posters on the Customer Service Forum that the Realm issues are being looked into, but so far, there does not seem to be a solid reason for the downtime other than, hey, it's patch day!
EDIT: It has now been confirmed that the downtimes were intentional for the purpose of emergency maintenance. The downtime should be minimal.
As of the time of this writing, the following servers are down:
- Lothar
- Madoran
- Azgalor
- Bleeding Hollow
- Bloodhoof
- Durotan
- Elune
- Magtheridon
- Medivh
- Stormrage
- Trollbane
- Warsong
- Argent Dawn
- Arthas
- Mannoroth
- Shattered Hand
- Skullcrusher
- Zul'jin

meh try connecting to an Oceanic realm on Bloodlust during peak raiding times (7pm AEST onwards) on a Sunday night and you will see what a regular and predictable BG crap out really looks like.

Yeah it sucks too. We had just started Gruul's Lair when the server went off line, and no one came back.

Once again we are ready to start our raid 7.30pm on Oceanic server and lag hits.. Since 2.4 there has only been a handful of nights we have been able to raid on time and all night. Despite a 119 page (and growing) complaint post on the Bliz customer service forums nothing seems to have been done about it..

Ruin has been having problems for weeks. There's clearly some kind of hardware problem they haven't figured out yet.

Small notice -- when you mention servers being down, it would be nice if you mentioned if this effects US, EU or any other... -.-

Maybe it's just me, but things seemed to be running just fine prior to the crash.
Yay for the server going down in the middle of BT. ¬¬

Trollbane was terrible before the server was finally taken down. I couldn't remove items from my mailbox then about 5 minutes later I start seeing the receives loot messages. LOL. When the server came back up everything ran perfect.

Trollbane is still on the fritz. 3 lag deaths within 15 minutes and I'm on a freaking t1 (hooray for sneaking play time at work). I've usually been the first to defend blizz as I'm a net admin myself and know how finicky servers can be but if I went this long with the same problems over and over again I'd be out of a job.
