Death Knights. Seems like they're all the rage these days, and they haven't even been released yet. It was revealed that Death Knights start at Level 55, the only requirement being that the player has an existing Level 55 character. Daniel has even declared his intention to make a Death Knight his main when the time comes. I wouldn't be surprised to see a proliferation of Death Knights when Wrath of the Lich King is finally released. When that time comes, prepare to get inoculated because the class is the first to finally use diseases as a core class mechanic.Aside from Undead Priests and their Devouring Plague, there are no player abilities that inflict the disease Dispel Type. So far, two disease-based abilities have been revealed: Blade Strike and Blood Strike. Designed to work off each other, Blade Strike is an attack that applies a disease on the target in addition to base damage while Blood Strike deals damage based on the number of diseases on the target. Death Knights are also able to raise Ghouls to fight for them and are projected to have an ability that applies a disease on their targets. Load up on Airborne, because it's going to get pretty toxic in Northrend.
One can only speculate what school of Magic the diseases will be based on. It's possible that they'll be Shadow-based considering the nature of the class but the probable culprit will be Nature, as virtually all disease debuffs in the game are currently Nature-based. The possibilities are exciting, but for now it's good to remember what abilities are out there to combat diseases. There are currently three classes that can remove diseases -- Paladins, Priests, and Shamans.
Paladins can Purify and Cleanse, while Priests can Abolish and Cure Disease. Shamans can also Cure Diseases as well as drop a Disease Cleansing Totem for AoE curing. The Dwarven racial ability Stoneform can also remove diseases, giving Dwarfs additional solutions against Death Knights. A couple of Alchemy concoctions, Restorative Potion and Purification Potion, also combat diseases but are suspect because of their low item level. Given that Death Knight encounters will be high level, these items are likely to fail.
Wrath of the Lich King may be a long ways off (we'll find out more during Blizzcon, I suppose), but it's exciting to see that Blizzard is exploring new ways to expand the game. With the advent of diseases -- and hopefully we'll see more Death Knight abilities based on them -- we'll see the use of abilities that sometimes don't even find their way to some players' Action Bars. Besides, it never hurts to prepare how to counter a Death Knight... from the looks of it, we'll be seeing them everywhere.

Airborne is just a multivitamin in a chew able form. It does nothing to cure the common cold that a standard multivitamin already does.
Well it does take some extra money out of your pockets too.

if only disease cleansing totem didn't block up every other useful water totem... do i want to defend against the thousands of new death knights? or the thousands of existing hunters and rouges?
that's not a fun choice.

Suddenly the dwarf racial Stoneform got a whole lot more attractive. Dispels all diseases and makes you immune to disease for 8 sec. It'll be nice to be a dwarf once the flood of loldeathknights lands.

Potential flame on me here: Does any one know if you have to have a level 55 character, in other words, exactly 55? Or does having a 70 count?
Just a thought I had.

Why do people keep asking that? That's not the first time I've seen it asked. Do people really think that Blizzard would implement something that required you to have a character at EXACTLY 55? That's just...silly...
But, seriously, no. They've clarified multiple times that you only need to have a character of at least 55. Basically, reaching 55, now or in the past "unlocks" the Death Knight for you. It should go without saying.

Does anyone know if it matters if your lvl55+ is Alliance or Horde? All of my high level toons are Alliance at the moment, but I'd like to be able to roll a level 55 Horde death knight if for no other reason than to see all those Horde towns and cities I've never had a chance to explore.
That and to see if the Horde are really so much more mature than us childish Alliance ;)

*cough* Cloak of Shadows. Though, of course, it isn't really a dispel.
I love my class.
I just hope the duration isn't anything like the mobs' inflicted diseases.
*Death Knight whacks you*
*Random Disease*
Ten minutes later...

Cloak of Shadows (rogue ability, lvl 70) - purges disease debuffs. Disease counts as nature damage I think. I use it often in ssc - where wandering plagues and such are a factor..I just cos out of any disease and parasite issues I get on my rogue. Perhaps that will work against the DK plagues?

Wow, does that mean I can go as a Horde death knight to, for example, SW or IF, and spread disease all over? Or maybe in somewhere with easy pickins like Lakeshire

Perhaps someone could enlighten me, as I fail to see what's so great about the disease aspect of this class. DK's look cool, yes, but all the disease mechanic really is is a DoT that can be dispelled.
I don't see how it's really anything grand but I've missed the obvious before so... :-)

Nothing grand, no. But it's something cool. No player class currently applies the disease debuff, so this is new territory as far as dispel types is concerned. Note that not all classes can dispel diseases, either, so it's more rock-paper-scissors. It's too early to tell, it's certain to be a palpable change.
