Here's a nice little bit of news for all leveling Hunters, people looking into starting a hunter alt, or people looking to switch out or tweak out their current pet: the popular depository of all things Hunter pet related in WoW, Petopia, has gotten a facelift and a few handy new reference pages. The quick links and references seem to be a lot more streamlined now, and it should be even easier to find information. Some pages are still making the transition, and some of the pet pictures have not been updated to the new color scheme, but Mania assures us she is working on that. In the meantime, she's also added a few new pages to the library, namely the Retired Pet page and the "Fake" Pet Skills page. The former deals with formerly tamable pets that can no longer be tamed, while the latter deals with pet skills that are present during the newbie hunter taming quests, but not on any permanently tamed pet.
I rather like both of the new pages. Not only should the information be helpful (if sad) to any newbie wondering where they can get that awesome ghost wolf, but the pages were a nice walk down memory lane for this old hunter. I remember when I made first Tauren Hunter, I was always disappointed that Swoop wasn't an actual bird pet skill, and I was considering a pet crab for my Dwarf Hunter at one point, and would have loved to have a thorny pet to add a bit more damage and threat power for tanking. Crabs could probably use some love anyway, as they seem to be competing with the likes of Sporebats and Bears for most neglected pet family.
But anyway, if you're a Hunter, and you haven't checked out Petopia in a while, it's worth a look, there's some pretty cool stuff going on over there.

My first WoW toon was a Hunter and I remember using Petopia on a regular basis.
But after 50 levels of watching my pet fight I got sick of playing a Hunter.
Maybe I need to revisit him and go melee alongside my little buddy!

There's nothing wrong with a little Hunter melee action. If you're going to PvP at all it's a must that you keep your weapons skill maxed for your level

Weapon skills are maxed in pvp combat. While this means leveling a weapon for pvp is unimportant, racial attribrutes, talents, and weapons with +skill still affect pvp hit/crit rating.

Regarding melee hunters.. yes, the thought is laughable to most.
But, with abilities like Wing Clip, Raptor Strike, and Disengage, do you not need to keep your weapon skill at least close to the cap to even have these abilities connect?
Every time my hunter went from 1h to 2h, to axe, to polearm, etc, I had to intentionally get in there and spam Wingclip just to get my skill up so I could reliably use it in a crisis.

Max weapon skill is important. Jousting with Wing Clip while kiting a mob or in PvP is damn important. Raptor Strike when you have no choice but to be in melee range so you're not just being a waste of space (Eagle Boss - ZA, Shade of Aran - Flame Wreath, PvP friggin' mages). There are also times where you're expected to melee a little - thinking of Kael'thas when Hunters are on Mind Control removal duty or kiting mobs to NPCs in Hyjal.
Best place to level weapons is to go out to Shadowmoon Valley to one of the Elemental broken (the banished ones where you have to kill 3 elemental totems to unleash them). Just swing away to your heart's content and you'll level up in no time.
A warning though... have a movie, audio book, or TV show on because 348 to 350 is going to take at least 45 minutes. It took longer for me, but I honestly was trying not to keep track.

I have a level 70 hunter and when lowbies ask me questions about pets I ask them if they've been to Petopia. If they say no then I tell them that they need to go there.
Regardless of style, it is the best resource for hunter's pets. Anytime I want to look up something about a pet, I go there. I just rolled a BE hunter and I wanted to know what pets I could look forward to in the BE zones. Petopia has the answers.

Hate to be a stickler, but who is designing Petopia? She needs a few tips from those fine folks at WOW Db or Wow Head, or even WOW Insider... the design and flow is laughably terrible. Information good.

I love Petopia, but I haven't been there in a while. I'll have to take a look at the revamped site today.
And by the way, my hunter has had a crab since level 10, currently level 69. Yes I'd love some skills for it beyond the basics, but I enjoy having an unusual pet anyway.
