When I'm soloing, I very rarely take advantage of PvP in the environment. I'm usually too busy leveling or grinding for cash to start a land war. I've even been known to help out an ally in distress. About the only time I attack unprovoked in the environment is when there is a quest monster close by that I need to fight.
I'm not out to run anybody's night. I just remember how frustrated I used to get trying to level in Hillsbrad or Stranglethorn Vale. I've noticed that not everyone agrees with me. I'm cool with that, if I didn't want to run the risk of being ganked, I'd roll on a PvE server.

My mage always carries his pvp gear, sometimes I hesitate cause I wonder if they can kill me or not. Some good signs for me to leave them alone.
Warlock with S3 shoulders Aka "don't mess with me"
Some signs of please kill me now are, PMC Priests, and S1Geared warriors.
Also safety in numbers before you gank check there guild name and look for guildies if they are in popular area such as Quel'Danas. My server is warzone packs of 10 alli or horde at one given time taging people and kicking em. I've done my fair share killing horde that think they are safe near the starting building. Around 70 kills so far.

There isn't really a strong division between Horde and Alliance on PvE servers. I mean, there's always faction pride, and everybody loves killing the fool who's flagged by the dungeon door, but there's far more cooperation and far less suspicion on PvE, if you ask me.
I've noticed that people on PvP servers tend to think "hey, this is WARcrat! We're at war!" Well, no we're not. The Alliance and Horde are not at war, lore-wise. There are certainly "border disputes", but the two factions work together just as often.

I'm lucky- I play in a PVP realm that has seen a massive player imbalance over the last few years; the alliance is only 30% of the population. Needless to say, leveling to 70 involves being ganked so much that it's almost not worth the trouble. Almost.
Now, whenever I am not busy, I never have to look far for horde targets. Sometimes if there's a few other people in my guild who are bored, we'll spend a few hours turning the hellfire peninsula into the least enjoyable zone in the entire game for horde.

Indeed. I think that a lot of people tend to forget the "World of" that precedes "Warcraft." It's not necessarily supposed to be solely about the continuation of past conflicts betwixt the Horde and the Alliance, but rather a sense of existing and interacting in that particular setting. But people get so caught up in that stupid competition that they lose sight of such a concept.

If Horde and Alliance are meant to get along, why can't they talk to each other? It's hard to say there's no division when you can't even talk to each other. I may've never played PvE server(PvP server yay), but I don't think you can communicate even on those.

RogueJedi. Hi, welcome to Earth. How many languages do you speak? Shall I have a Japanese friend kill you because you don't speak Japanese? Clearly a sign that you must be purged!

Also if you in STV, and I'm fishing on my main, and your lvl begins with a 1 and ends with a 9 GL with a fireblast to the faces.

Well, lvl 19s shouldn't be in STV to start with. You are doing em a favor.

I'm on a PvE server, so ganking (or whatever) opportunites are pretty rare. Recently been levelling my third character, and I've engaged in spontaneous PvP twice. Would be interested in whether my experiences qualify as "griefing" or "ganking".
First time was in the Hinterlands. There's a High Elf Lodge there with a troll NPC prisoner who's flagged as PvP. There was a tauren druid freeing him (for a quest I imagine). First attempt he made I stealthed up behind the NPC and killed it. Then I hung around, in stealth, to see if the Tauren would come back. He did, and I attacked the NPC again - the Tauren flagged himself, we fought before he ran off. I waited around the area awhile, no sign of the tauren coming back. So I just got on with my questing. I was herbing a node when I get pounced on by the tauren from stealth. We fought, I won (barely, though). It was a rush though. Could my actions against the (flagged) Horde quest NPC be considered "griefing"?
Second example was in Hellfire, Thornfang hill. I'm collecting ravager eggs, and I notice a Tauren warrior (flagged) fighting off a few ravagers (about 3). I stealth, flag myself, and prowl up behind him. He barely manages to survive the 3 mobs, I wait until he kills them, before I pounce and two-shot him. I got a mischevious thrill from it I guess, but it wasn't as engaging as the first example, for me. bearing in mind he was flagged, did I gank him or was he asking for it?
Interested to see your opinions.

First one was griefing. Just killing someones quest NPC for the sake of being a friggin prick is being a friggin prick. The second was ganking. Flagged player smacking away at trash is fair game. That happens a thousand times an hour on a PVP server.
But still, the first example. Killing someones quest NPC, not once but twice, is just down right asshat behavior.

I'd call killing a quest NPC griefing. (Yes, that troll is for an escort quest.)
In the second case, it was a fair kill. On a PvE server, if you *choose* to have your flag on while questing, you have no right to complain about being killed anytime, anywhere.

And you are on a PVE server because?? You need to reroll your griefing ganky ways to a PVP server.

For me I dont gank anyone else, as you said STV was a gankfest, so I refuse to go there anymore. I personally wish I could switch to a PVE server so I wouldnt have to deal with the frustration of getting killed when I am trying to quest, but my real life friends are all on the PVP server so I dont really have much of a choice as to where I play because the game wouldnt be nearly as much fun playing without them.

It really depends on what you play WoW for. For two years, I've primarily played on PvP servers just because my friends are there. Leveling and playing on a PvP server can be just painful at times, especially when you're trying to quest or level and some 13 year old rogue thinks it's fun to follow you around, killing you as soon as you engage a mob. However, if you play on a PvP server, you have to accept things like that and get over it.
I have recently rerolled on a PvE server and I find it much more to my personal tastes, since I enjoy the lore, questing, and atmosphere of the game. If I wanted non-stop PvP action, I'd go play Halo or something like that. Of course, in your average FPS shooter, at least the gear level is usually balanced....
Anyone who flags themselves on PvE servers deserves what they get ;)

There is something to that - on a pvp server I'd turn in quests as quick as I could - for fear of not being able to turn them in at all (or until the next corpse run).
On pve its kinda fun to read all the text and take my time.

I know that I hate doing the Shattered Sun daily where you charge the fel flare up to blow up the transporter to find a handful of horde waiting by the transporter and ganking everyone before they can finish the quest. Meaning you have to do the quest over again cuz your little flare dies

Agreed.
I play on a PVE server, and yesterday I was on my way to Kara when I happened upon a 45 human warrior.
I stopped to toss an emote or two when one of the horde guard patrols walked up and started beating on him.
Then, with me standing right there, he chose to attack the guard rather than ride away (he was mounted).
As a proud member of the Horde, I felt obligated to support the brave guard from Stonard.
Yeah, maybe I was a dick, but maybe he learned something.... hell, I knew enough to wait until I was unflagged before proceeding to Kara.
:p

Red is dead.
That said, 70's that ride through STV just to "clean house" (unless they're countering opposing 70's who are doing the same) are the main reason I have a /golfclap macro. So, occasionally I won't gank a gray in an especially low zone just because it's not worth dismounting just to be "that guy" (whatever the zone). Occasionally. Okay, rarely. Alright, I just wouldn't go specifically to a low zone for ganking.
