For some reason on my home server, Eldre'Thalas, when folks see a tank standing around in Shattrath without anything to do, they immediately start sending tells asking if I want to go tank such-and-such an instance for them. I don't mind it when my friends or guild mates do it, but it does get a little annoying when complete strangers do it constantly.So I've come up with a solution: spirit and intellect armor. Whenever I'm doing anything other than fighting, I'm wearing bright yellow spirit and intellect armor that I got off the AH. I spent about a hundred gold on this dastardly set. It looks awful, it smells awful, and it's a great repellent for annoying unsolicited LFG tells.
I got the idea from looking at people's gear who are apping to my guild. Some of it was just plain nuts – spirit gear on Warriors, "of stamina" gear on Priests, things like that. Of course, they might have just been logged out in that gear the same way I'm logged out in mine right now. But when you're apping to a guild and one of the requirements is to log out in PvE gear for the next week, well, too bad so sad for them.
While this has solved the problem of annoying LFG tells, it has created another one. "What the $@%% is with your gear? Are you a $@@#$!@1!" asks one Mage. "Um... did you buy your character off ebay?" questions a Paladin. These make me laugh more than anything, so they're easy to ignore.

If I get asked to tank, I sometimes arrive wearing the level one armour set you can buy in the starting areas. Always good for a laugh... Until you forget to take it off for raids.

It took so long for my T2 shoudlers to drop, I started tanking with the shaman dungeon set out of spite! But yea, I had a play set, involved the rocket helm and one naked warrior! I've always wanted to collect the white bandit leather armor, looks kickass if you can gather all the pieces.

Also; for somebody whose job it is to write about your experiences with World of Warcraft, is it too much trouble to ask that you use the appropriate words? "Aping" is an entirely different and real word, and saves only 3 letters from "applying". You're hardly abbreviating Serpentshrine Cavern, here.

Kapowaz has a point. Applying and Apping are just 2 letters apart. Best example for shortening has been provided - Serpentshrine Caverns into SSC. U SRSLY CNT B THT LZY 2 TYP 2 LTTRS!

With kapowaz on this one - apping is not a necessary abbreviation for applying, and aping has a different meaning.
Also, why is correcting a blogger's spelling or grammar such a bad thing? After all, correct use of language will help the bloggers to get their point across quicker, which is probably something they'd like. So kapowaz' post was actually helpful for Adam.

You guys who are challenging apping (I'm sure aping is just a typo) need to go study rhetoric. If you want to capture the attention of your audience and persuade them, you need to appeal to your character and emotion (pathos and ethos). Using "insider" words like apping is one way of appealing to a particular group. The mmo community has a lot of slang that makes us feel part of a homogeneous group, and a writer who is catering to such a group is well-advised to use that type of language. Any WoW player can easily identify a newbie player by their lack of familiarity with the jargon.
If you doubt me, those of you pushing for stricter grammar also are part of a group (a group that values the use of formal language). Both groups can easily identify those who are "in" and those who are "out" by the language and terminology used.

I was fighting with MS word all night as it tried to correct apping into aping. Looks like it managed to get one by me before I posted this.
Regarding the use of the word, you'll notice that yourself and everyone else knew what I was talking about. It is part of our lexicon as players of World of Warcraft. As such I look at it as a stylistic choice, within the bounds of proper use during discourse.
