Most tanks swear by outfitter – a tool that allows you to quickly change around pre-saved outfits. For instance, say I'm going to be tanking the nature phase of Hydross. Before even setting foot in SSC, I would have spent an hour or so making sure I had all the necessary gear, stats, and configurations that Hydross requires. A good part of this time would be spent getting all those gearing changes into an easy to use outfitter profile – so I would just have to click one button to wear the gear.
Of course, that's resistant gear and it's expected that there'll have to be a bunch of switching of it. However, the gear switching doesn't end there.
As it stands right now, I have 10 different combinations of gear on my warrior:
- Nature gear
- Frost gear
- Shadow gear
- General tanking gear
- Max stamina gear
- Avoidance gear
- Dodge/Parry gear
- Nude (hey, sometimes you've just got strip off your cloths and /dance)
- Threat trash gear
- Threat boss gear
All of the sudden, all those gearing combinations start to make sense. It really gets unruly at times – not necessarily in terms of bag space, but in terms of sheer options available.
What have you done to help keep track of all the gearing options your hard earned epics provide you? How many combinations of gear do you carry around?

Yes it will automatically pull the gear out of your bank for you to wear.
It comes in very handy.

Outfitter works with your banked items as well. If you have your bank open, selecting an outfit will pull stuff from your bank; it does leave the switched out items in your bank. There is a menu item for each outfit which says essentially, "pull all of the stuff from the bank that belongs in this outfit." There is a similar menu item which says, "put all of the stuff in this outfit into the bank."
The latter option isn't so useful; you want "put all of the stuff unique to this outfit into the bank." Since many items are shared across outfits, this works better.
It will also help you create new outfits by searching out items that, say, maximize stamina or fire resistance.

I switched to this from Itemrack a while ago, and haven't looked back. I really like how easy it is to use and maintain.
As for sets, I'm a druid with a PvE healing set, a PvP healing set, a moonkin set, a feral dps set, and most of a tanking set, as well as a lot of other miscellaneous trinkets and costume items. As you might guess, I'm pretty short on bag space!

Outfitter is a godsend. I used to use macros to switch between threat and stam gear. Entering SSC, things get more complicated, and macros are inherently limited. I switched to Outfitter and couldn't be more happy. I now have very many gear-sets, some tailored to individual bosses. But the ones I use most are Max HP, trash-tanking gear, Max threat, Max-hp+good threat, and the various resist sets.

I haven't really Looked into outfitter, or closetgnome, ever. I use good old Itemrack, with a secondary bar and macro's linked to my gear setups.
on my warrior alone, I have got over 12 gear setups, but funilly enough,
- even though I have been tanking (high level content) for practically my entire wow 'carreer'-
I have only 1 normal tanking set. no 'max stamina', no 'max threat' (though that might be nice for 5-mans), and no 'max mitigation'.
to me, an 'older' tanking item feels inferior, once I receive an item that is able to replace that adequately.
for instance, I just dropped my T5 tanking legs in the bank, the moment I had fully enchanted and gemmed my T6 tanking legs.
I know that T5 might perhaps be more useful to create a 'passive crit immunity' set, but frankly, it just would make me feel crappy.. less armor, less stamina, etc
as for threat: in 3 years of playing a warrior, I have just learned to make do with what I have got, I don't believe that a 'max threat' set would offer that much more threat, to make it worth my while... i'll just work harder then. and with that attitude, I can still properly tank 5-mans.
ofcourse, I do have tweaked out resistance sets, and re-evaluate them on a regular basis, to make sure they are the best I can offer on that subject.
I'm glad you mentioned the naked setup aswell.
it doesn't happen often, but it's still nice to occasionally be able to take off all your gear, and save yourself a repair bill :)

I keep a few trinkets on me and let Outfitter switch them according to what I'm doing [man, equipping the carrot every time I mount would be a pain].
I keep Mirren's Drinking Hat for when I'm just cruising around town [the slurs and hics every time I'm in Shatt have brought my guild into thinking I'm an alcoholic... I should probably expect an intervention soon]
I probably carry around a bit more than I need to [5 or 6 trinkets, a couple minipets and "town gear"], and as a Hunter I'm already limited by my Quiver, but eh, deleting a gray every now and then can't hurt.

I'm currently tweaking my max sta rig so I've pulled the set from my itemrack list atm.

I use Item rack to manage my gear and have found it to be a God send. Closet gnome just did not work as well for me. My current sets include:
PVP
tanking
DPS (yeah I know this is just wishful thinking)
Riding
I am starting to work on gathering all my sets for resists but am not sure as to how much I am going to need them since i doubt 25 mans are in my future.
I have found that I have several pieces that can move in a and out to create advantages for certain situations but have a hard time balancing it all. I have about 3 18 slot bags of gear that I cary around with me constantly and it is getting a bit ridiculous.

I use "questing gear" then depending on what class I'm playing I might have "healing gear".. or stance gear - like when I'm a tank.. I'm change outfit depending on my stance.. I've heard that you can't do it with a paly.. but I'm going to try figure that one out. I only wish I could make out that would work when I'm out of combat and wish to heal the fastest.
