Just this weekend I did something I never expected I would do: Spent 5,000 gold on epic flight. On my main? Oh no, I've had that for months now. I spent 5,000 gold on my alt. My alt! Good gravy!Honestly, I don't really regret it, it's mostly the shock of spending that much gold on an alt that gets me. I'll definitely be putting the epic gryphon to good use, I play my alt quite a bit. Like I mentioned in another recent post, my alt is almost my second main. Pretty much full epics, has seen the insides of Zul'Aman, Tempest Keep and Serpentshrine, capped Blacksmithing, all of that. The fact remains, though, it is an alt. 5,000 gold on an alt!
I can't be the only one crazy enough to do this, am I? Surely there are others with alts that have epic flight? Most of my friends poked fun at me about it, but besides waiting for Wrath of the Lich King, what am I going to use that money for anyway? I suppose I could feast on Stormwind Brie instead but I have a feeling an epic gryphon is a little more useful, no?

My friend got epic mounts on 4 of his alts...
Just like you said, why let all that gold just wait for WoTLK

I've probably dropped 300-500g on my Paladin alt over the last few months, just in getting him geared up before he hits Outlands.

It's not that unusual really, like the OP said if you have a character that might as well be a second alt then you want them to fly fast.
It's when your me and you have one character with a nether drake and another with their epic flight form, then you have to worry...

I agree that this expense feels a little shocking, but it's also sort of necessary. I'll have my 3rd epic flyer in about a month. My main alliance toon got it, then I got one for my farming alt (sorry, if you're farming it's a Must Have) and now it's time for my main horde toon. It's hard to go flapping along like you're on that retarded buzzard in the old Looney Toon cartoons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaky_Buzzard) to join in a 5-man when your guildies are zipping by on their netherdrakes. I feel your pain though!

All my (Alliance) level 70 characters have epic mounts and raid quality gear (though only one actually raids - 6/6 SSC and 3/4 TK), as well as maxed production professions and, where applicable, full sets of BoP epic crafted gear. It's not that I have huge amounts of time with nothing better to do, but having taken the effort to get them to level 70 in the first place it seems silly to let them languish with anything less than the absolute best they can get.
I hate PvP to bits, so all their gear and sundries are obtained through pure PvE - perhaps that's how I could find the funds for it. Doing daily quests on a few characters a day is a quick and easy way to make ridiculous amounts of gold, at least until you get bored of it!
60% flight is way too frustrating anyway.

Lol..it never ends. My Hunter's still working on Epic Flyer..but I have 3 alts who are closing in on Epic land mounts.
Having 6 toons, 4 of which are mounted..the best money I ever "wasted" on an alt..was my little lv 6 Pally. He has all his bank slots...28 Mining bag, the rest 18 or 16 slotters. All my toons vendor trash/ah fodder goes to him. Nice to have one toon handle all the business, no more logging on to every toon trying to find that ever elusive item you swear you have....somewhere.

When my warrior was still my "alt" (as in, lower level, played less often), I first realized I was spending too much on him when I decided it was time to level his blacksmithing.
Stacks and stacks and stacks of mithril and thorium ...
But now he's my main and my old alt needs to be sent gold in order to use the mail system.

Heck my alt HAS an epic flying mount (netherdragon too!) while my main still has the slow mount.
Playing as a holy paladin main, farming is definitely out of the question; it's just too slow and not worth the time. Thus when I levelled my druid to 70, she became my farming alt, and being an alchemist she helped farm my pots and flasks for my paladin, which is extremely useful since I'm now in MH/BT.
For that reason I channelled all my money to my druid, and she now has over 4000g, almost there to buy my main his mount.

Who made this ominous rule that you have to have one main and 9 alts on a server?

I have it on all my 2 "main" characters, and on my farming alt. (the paladin healer I'm leveling up is not gonna get it)

It all depends on how you use your character. My main doesn't need the epic flier, never will. He's a prot warrior tank. He can't farm to save his life, and I have no interest in gearing him up for PvE DPS. My alt (possibly going to be my new main) is a DPS shaman. She, naturally, is a much better farmer and although I don't have enough gold for it at the moment, I could see myself saving up to get her said mount. Everything she does involves her going from place to place, be it mining, skinning, questing, or going to instances. My main, on the other hand, sits in Shatt waiting to raid, or sitting at a lake, fishing and waiting to raid.
The point of the epic flying mount is to save time. If it's saving you 5000 G worth of time, then go for it.

Whilst I don't have any 70 alts atm (I've got 8 horde alts on my main's server, 7 are either 44 or 45 and 1 is 63), and I could never imagine getting any of them an epic flyer at this stage of the game. I do pretty much all of my main stuff on my pally (farming, raiding, PvP, etc.) so I just can't imagine the need to do it on any of my just for fun, let off steam alts. =)
But that's just me. And I'm pretty thrifty. ^_^

Each of my three level seventy 'toons has an epic flying mount. I'll be the first one to tell you - the gold is as well spent as the enjoyment you get out of it.
I personally like zooming around on a turbobird rather than kicking back and taking the slow route.

I have three epic flyers. One on my Herbalist, one on my Miner, and one because I wanted a Dragon. :)
Probably won't buy any more, I really wanted the gathering professions covered because it makes life so much easier.

I have spent, so far, over 1,000 gold on my level 1 twink alt. I am making video to expound on the fun of the level 1 twink.
I also am planning on spending more on a second and third set of enchanted gear for him.

If your toon is full of epics then what's the point in playing the semantics game and calling him an "alt"? A toon is a toon.

Think of it this way. That cash in the bank isn't earning you interest so there's no need to keep hold of it (unless you are saving for something specific).
Buying an epic flying mount for my herbalist alt paid for itself in a month or so :-)

I have epic flyers on my main and my rogue alt. I'm working on my hunter's epic at the moment. I had the same initial "Omg, 5000 gold on an alt" moment, but that passed as soon as I got to the Netherwing Ledge :)
