Wowhead now in 3D
So far they just have the NPCs and the items that aren't tied to player models; player models are in the works. For instance, gloves, chest armor, and boots are all linked to the models of player characters, so there are no models for those yet, but weapons and shoulders are not, so those models are up. There's a Flash version and a Java version of the model viewer; the Java version is significantly higher-quality and works better on a Mac than the Flash version, so I'd recommend using that one unless you don't have Java for some reason. One more thing -- throughout Wowhead, item and spell links now have mouse-over tooltips, so like us, Wowhead is now powered by Wowhead.

I've always wanted to mess around with Modelviewer, but never found the time. This is kind of the next best thing, amirite?
There goes my productivity for today!

LOL If you think this feature is going to last, think again. I would be amazed if Blizzard tolerated this, as it uses actual in-game IP and content to populate a third-party site. Expect a cease-and-desist order soon.
Seriously, I'm amazed they thought they could put this out there.

What about screenshots? What about Petopia? All of these use Blizzard IP. This is really nothing more than Petopia for everything else. Granted, Petopia doesn't have 3d viewing, but it's the same thing. I don't see the big deal. They're not using this to SELL something, they're using it as part of a World of Warcraft database!

There is a BIG difference between screenshots and ACTUAL GAME MODELS. If Blizz allows this, there is nothing stopping people from recreating WoW environments online or anything else that they can imagine. I'm concerned only because Wowhead is a great site and they are putting themselves at risk with this new service.
PS they are using their service to sell advertising.

They allow people to use in game models to make movies knowing the most popular ones use the wow model viewer and private servers. In fact a few of the ones on the official sites were done using wow model viewer.
