Over the weekend (while I was chowing down on turkey and mashed potatoes), Mania headed into the new PTR, and came back with some great news for Hunters leveling pets-- it's going to be faster.Pets will require 33% less XP to level up on the PTR, which (I believe) is in addition to the player leveling changes. Pets still, however, don't earn XP from quests (which makes sense, in a strange way, I guess, because you could bring one pet on a quest, and bring another to turn it in), and they don't earn XP on grey kills, either. Mania's testing also shows that pets earn the same XP on both live and test realms, which means pets don't actually earn XP faster-- they just don't need as much of it.
Good stuff. I don't ever plan to actually level up a pet on its own (I have enough trouble leveling up my alts as it is), but it's good to know that the pet I've got coming with my lowbie Hunter will be grabbing XP faster than ever.

Glad to hear they are fixing this. When the patch came out I played my hunter from 36 to 38. My pet didn't get a single level in that time, so I stopped playing him. Even with the change, I'm afraid the damage is done and I won't ever be the same level as him until 70 (or 80).

I actually have been leveling a hunter since 2.3 went live. I went from 22 to 38 (just hit that last night) and my pet is at 37. The leveling isn't really all that bad as long as you kill on your way to and from quests (and spend a lot of time on drop quests). But I am grateful for the improvement, because there have been times when my pet is lagging 2 or 3 levels behind because of a string of quest turn-ins and that isn't much fun.

It's possible to keep a single pet levelled with you in the 2.3 world, but forget about having two. Hope the fix is soon.

Totally agreed. One is five levels behind me at this point, while the other is three levels behind. Why Blizzard won't just create a /level command to even a pet up with your character's level is beyond me. If they're concerned about training points coming too easily, they could just assign the maximum only when the pet had achieved "Best Friend" status.

My experience has been the opposite of Stig's since 2.3 hit. I've been using Jame's leveling guide. At the patch, pet and hunter were at the same level. Now pet is three levels behind hunter...at 52, it's going to take quite a while for pet to catch up.

I don't think it's true that you can't have 2 pets at your level. I just dinged 48 and both my pets are 44. It does bother me that they're behind me, but like Stig said, I make sure to mix in a fair amount of grinding with my questing. I think it'll work out.

Finally! Way back when I was a lowly level 11, I made the long journey to Mulgore to tame the Rake. He was then with me for the rest of my journey to 60, where he was respecced for PvP. When TBC hit, I chose to level accompanied by my PvE Boar and poor old Pangur got left behind. Since then I've made attempts to level him, but endless grinding is soul destroying. But with this change, my faithful friend can finally look forward to maxxing his level and returning to ripping the faces off Hordie casters.
