A simple topic, but so difficult to figure out the answer to. If you could go back to when you first played WoW and give yourself some advice (WoW-related only, you can't tell yourself not to date that skeezy dude with the '80s hair from the Rockford), what would you tell yourself?
In retrospect, I probably would have advised myself not to make a Rogue as my first character to level. They're a nice class, but having a primary Rogue made it difficult to get into groups and raids. I would have made a Druid or Priest instead.
Additionally, I would have never tried to level in Silverpine Forest, entered Stromgarde Keep, or tried to solo all the seven billion elite quests before Outlands. I would have never tried to raid hardcore, and generally spent less time thinking about loot and more time cooking deviate fish.
What would you do differently if you started WoW again?

That leveling the Paladin up first was a really bad idea.

My first character was a Warrior. After three years and many alts, I have always come back to the Warrior class; so, I would have told myself not to worry about trying every class, and instead to focus on leveling/gearing a single main character and on playing through more instances. Also, I would have told myself not to bother buying armor or weapons from vendors (yes, I did that in the beginning).

I'd have to say that it would be a good idea to have gone feral for the 60-70 grind. Once I hit 70 my guild wanted me to go feral and I had no feral gear whatsoever.

1. pick your professions and stick with them.
2. go ahead and spend some money on fun stuff. its just a game.
3. respec VERY CAREFULLY
4. when a friend tells you it will take about 45 minutes to run WC, he's lying.

Everybody hates rogues until they roll one...
As for advice, roll a second alt in a class that you have no interest in that is a miner and other gathering profession so you can make money to support the one you actually like...

I wouldn't have leveled a Hunter to 61 first. Had a hard time getting groups so now...two years later, I'm just learning how to group properly with my new main and alts.
I would've rolled on an RP server as I've made more friends on Kirin Tor in the few months of playing there than I did in two years of playing on a PvE.

I'd have not done all those grey quests, although the warlock was good I would have rolled a tank/healer first too for better group experience.
I would also have gotten into fishing in a big way to start with as it pays great as a gathering profession.
And before AV turned into a 3 minute wonder post level 60 I'd have gone around collecting all the blood I could and handing it in for masses of Ogrimmar rep - its a pain post level 60 as it ends well before you can collect a serious amount.
Lastly I'd have looked for a new server to bag the character name Legolas first, he'd be a level 1 gnome rogue just to annoy the wanabee's :)
Well actually I can still do that one now ....

Don't listen to them when they said a Troll Priest with Enchanting/Tailoring as my first ever WoW character. Roll the undead mage or the Tauren Druid (Resto) and run with it.
Don't waste time using fishing to try and make money, Yes Oily Blackmouth and Deviate Fish are nice, but you need to be leveling everythin else!
Don't jump to the PVP server just cause a friend asked you to. Yes it taght you how to PVP and play a druid for the first time, but you will waste too much time.
Save your BG marks, don't turn them in for rep, IT'S A TRAP! Just horde them.
Save those marks during AQ as well, you know a better mount is coming if you just wait to use them! (Damn you's hawkstrider!)

Don't roll a warrior.
If I hadn't've rolled my warrior, I would've got my 'lock to 60 early enough that I would've gotten to try at least ZG and MC, back before Burning Crusade came out.
