Two bosses will enter... but only one will get to leave! Every week at WoW Insider, we pit two of the most interesting bosses in the World of Warcraft against one another in a fantasy deathmatch -- in the end to emerge with a single boss of bosses, victorious above all others. And the best part? You get to tell us who walks away the winner and who doesn't get to leave our arena at all. Today we're considering a fight between the Black Temple's Teron Gorefiend and Gruul the Dragonkiller. Curious as to what might happen if these two met up? Keep reading and we'll discuss what each of these bosses can do and what might happen if they met up.
Teron is a difficult fight, to say the least. He deals heavy melee, shadow, and fire damage and requires coordination and strategy to defeat. Beyond basic melee attacks, Teron will do the following:
- Shadow of Death: Turns the target into a ghost and spawns 4 Shadowy Constructs. However, for the purposes of our fight, we will assume Gruul is immune to such instant-kill abilities.
- Doom Blossom: Spawn and fire Shadowbolts at Teron's enemies. These last about two minutes and keep spawning as the fight continues.
- Crushing Shadows: Teron will randomly debuff one of his targets with Crushing Shadows, which increases Shadow damage taken for 15 seconds.
- Incinerate: A high damage fire-based DoT.
Gruul relies primarily on melee damage to bring down his enemies -- and that damage only gets worse as you fight him, for every 30 seconds, Gruul will buff himself with Growth and increase his damage by 15%. We're ignoring abilities that relate to the specific terrain of Gruul's lair, because we presume these fights take place in a neutral arena. However, Gruul still has a few tricks up his sleeve:
- Hurtful Strike hits the 2nd target on the threat list for a high amount of melee damage (12k to 13k). If there isn't a second target in melee range, Gruul will hit his primary target with Hurtful Strike. The damage increases with each Growth.
- Ground Slam: An AoE knockback.
- Gronn Lord's Grasp: After being knocked back by Ground Slam, players receive this debuff, which reduces movement speed by 20%. Stacks.
- Stoned: After 5 stacks of Gronn Lord's Grasp, the player will become stunned by Stoned.
- Shatter: After Stoning his targets, Gruul will Shatter them, dealing damage (more if players are close to one another.)
So who do you think will win and who do you think will lose? It's nearly time to cast your vote, but before you do, remember: we're considering these two bosses at approximately the same health and strength. These fights are all theorycraft, considering each bosses' abilities -- they aren't a math equation where we consider exact hitpoints.

Their is no way Teron could win this, gruul would absolutely pwn him. Imagine for a second a shadow priest with no power word shields and no fear taking on a prot spec warrior with ultra high dps and silence abilities.
Sure Teron is harder to down as a raid boss, but when looking at 1v1, one can't ignore that you are pinning a caster that cannot mitigate damage against an uber tank.
Imagine a pvp situation with a druid tank that can silence vs a shadow priest that has lost his best ability, fear.
Case and point if you think that Teron Gorefiend would win then you need to pvp some more and actually see what kind of battle this really would be.

yes maybe gorefiend is a hard fight with 25 players but we are putting 2 bosses together, gruul keeps hitting harder, in this fight he doesnt oneshot you and you dont have the ghosts (SS anyone :) ) gruul's revbue will help with the dmg and stuns as well. just because he is in BT doesn make him win look at maggy vs the bug in aq40 :P think that they are both BT bosses if it helps you elties oh you dont know anything i am BT your not so i know it all.
my 2 cents

@4, I think the point is, if you read it properly, that they would be equal in hitpoints etc.
I think if that were the case, Gruul would survive long enough for his growths to become ridiculously powerful. His shatter in this fight would be completely useless though.

Gruul, give him a few minutes and he'll squish Teron flat.

Erm, I can't see how Gruul would win this. I agree that his phisical dmg done is huge but Teron hits like a train aswell. On top of that he will spawn many doom blossoms that keep attacking Gruul during Shatter process (during that time Teron will take ~4-6k dmg since noone else is around and thats really tinny since every shatter process takes around 15 seconds. Not to mention incinerate!

The Stoned/Shatter thingy from Gruul wouldn't affect Teron (he's the only one there) and Cave In would rarely hit Teron. That leaves the only good abilities of Gruul as Reverberation, Hurtful Strike and Growth. Teron would only have his Doom Blossom (shoots shadowbolts randomly at the raid), Incinerate and Crushing Shadows.
I reckon Gruul would win. Hateful strike is pretty powerful, and would take out Teron pretty quickly when combined with Growth, for Teron doesn't really have anything that can deal much major damage.

I'm assuming Gruul would fail when Gorefiend uses his shadow of death ability... Gruul lacks hand/eye coordination and would completely screw it up :P

I'd say Gruul would kill Teron. I think his AoE damage done from Shattering will demolish Gorefiend's adds, neutralizing them making his opponent vulnerable to his Hurtful Strikes. Thinking that Teron will be both stunned and silenced, I can't really see how he's going to win this one.
(I haven't done Teron Gorefiend in the Black Temple yet, so I can't really be the judge of how hard he can be regardless, but I guess since they're both pretty equalized that Gruul will win this one.)

Although Teron is much harder to beat in raid situation, I would agree that Gruul would most likely decide this matchup for himself, provided Teron can not use his Shadow of Death ability, thus one-shotting Gruul.
Gruul just dishes out to much physical damage for Teron to handle. While Shatter won't pose a thread to Teron, his ability to grow combined with those nasty Hurtfuls, also his silences can and will put Teron in a difficult spot.
I believe that Terons abilities won't stop Gruul from pounding him to pieces.

Gorefiend wipes raids because he damages many people including the tank too much to be healed. Gruul wipes raids because he one-shots the tank after X number of growths. Given that this is a one-on-one fight, all other things being equal, Gruul wins in a walk.

You're not realizing that shatter would affect Teron, the Fire blossoms would also get affected by shatter and increase the damage done, if they keep spawning it means more people on the playing field equals more chance to get a huge hit from Shatter. Plus the growths after awhile would start taking huge chunks out of Terons health. Gruul wins.

Even if Gruul was immune to the shadow of death ghost thing, Teron could still spawn the shadowy constructs. These would melee Gruul, thereby possibly taking hurtful strikes. Teron wouldn't spawn the blossoms immediately around him so he might not increase the shatter damage he takes from them being around him. Even when he gets knocked back and can't melee Gruul he can make sure the incinerate is up. I think Teron would win in this fight.

I think the *it would be a draw* button should be removed. One of them is gonna die first, there are no draws in duels. And people who vote that should pick 1 or not vote.

if I can solo the ghost of Teron Gorefiend in SMV and it takes 24 of my friends for us to take out Gruul.... I say that Gruul could take the real Teron out :) That's my reasoning and I'm sticking to it!
