Up till now the conventional answer was: "suffer." Low level pets only gain experience when you kill something around your level range, not theirs, so the only choice is to just bear with it for a very long time while you try to kill high-level monsters with a low-level pet, or else just give up and not do it.
Well finally it looks like Blizzard has in mind something to do about it. Drysc tells us:
We have plans to adjust how quickly a hunter's pet will level if there's a large gap between it and the hunter's level. However, it's still just a plan and not something we've implemented and thus are not ready to discuss it.Something's going to happen -- we just don't know what it is yet. But really, for hunters anything would be better than what it is now. It's always nice to remove needless tedium don't you think?

Hopefully they do this soon. Its a great idea, especially since there are so many pet classes under-represented in BC (boars anyone?)
Some people will still complain that its not fair because they leveled up their ghost saber the old way and anyone who went and got a ghost saber now when its EZ-mode just doesn't appreciate all the hard work they did ...

This kind of response is getting quite tiresome.

naaru please, they should focus on something important...like buffing palaldins! Hunters are doing fine without an army of extra level 70 pets, they can still raid, ret paldins on the other hand....

This would be a welcomed change. I released my boar because I wanted to try out some of the new Burning Crusade pets and only had two stable slots to work with. Now, I want my boar back but I'm too lazy to level one up again. I hope this change comes sooner rather than later.

"Suffer"
If you want a pet that is only available at low levels, then you've got to level it. Might as well get decent loot off lvl 70 mobs than tons of horrible loot off 25 ad up.

finally. my luck they will do it just after i get my lowbie boar to 70 and at the rate im going it will be when the next expansion will come out. lvling a lowbie pet has got to be one of the most boring things next to rep grinding.

Her comments translated "we may do it, but we're not sure, it could happen, but we don't want to make any promises though we'll look into it, but it will not happen soon, but it looks good but we can't say anything yet".

That'll be pretty nice. Even leveling my boar from 26 (he's an armored one from RFK) to 36 was a pain in the ass.
If you're 70 and want a lowbie pet, I think your best bet is just to respec for melee combat.

It always kind of baffled me that Blizzard still keeps this kind of pointless grind around, when much of WoW's success is because it reduced the pointless grinding mechanics in MMORPGs.

its really not that bad, if you dont mind doing a few things:
1. train lvl 20 ghost saber or whatever
2. spec marks/exp.weakness (so you dont rely on pet for dps)
3. do nothing but run easy regular instances like Durn or Slabs, and keep pet by your side
4. watch lvl 20 pet go up 12 levels in one run
5. gain rep (if applicable)
i've found that most pugs won't mind if you're leveling a new pet.. especially if you establish that youre not BM and if you are a little high level for the instance, like Durn or Seth halls.
getting them from 60-70 is the worst part, it takes like 20+ runs... but if you just run shattered halls all that rep will get you a sweet ranged wepon...

There may be more important things that need fixing, but the low-level pet xp mechanic is terrible and needs some serious attention. How it is now doesn't make sense by any definition or any way you look at it.

They need to make it like warlock pets for god's sake.
There's no point in making us suffer like that.

I don't know about anyone else on this thread, but after seeing 3, I'm going to shelve my hopes for a hunter fix in lieu of seeing ret paladins get nerfed so far into the ground that warriors are staring in astonishment and pity.

Like I always say, there's nothing, and I mean nothing wrong in this game that can't be fixed by nerfing paladins.

I don't agree with this. Reason being, is everyone will have the same "cool" pets. If you want it, get it while you are leveling, and level it up, or "suffer" at 70 and work for it.
