Blizzard CM Drysc announced that the Voice Chat feature will be implemented onto the live realms in stages and that only a select few will have integrated Voice Chat enabled when Patch 2.2 is released. All realms will be getting all other features of Patch 2.2, but some of the realms will have to wait until the following week for Voice Chat to be enabled.Drysc goes on to say that Voice Chat will be on separate servers from the actual game realms:
Voice chat doesn't run through the game servers. This test is of the voice chat servers themselves, not the game realms. If there's an issue voice chat won't be available, the realms themselves shouldn't be affected. In any case, that's what this initial set of realms is to test, how voice chat handles and interacts with the realms on a wider scale.
I don't know if this means we are getting Patch 2.2 on Tuesday 9/18 or not, but I do know that I won't have Voice Chat to play with on my main realm until the week after its release.
Check out our hands on look at Voice Chat and look for the list of realms getting Voice Chat first after the jump.

For those realms who aren't getting voice chat right away (like mine) realize that we aren't the ones who have to test it, so it's not all bad.
We probably won't be faced with the initial problems these realms will.

Out of interest what is the population like on these realms?
Looks like voice chat is only going out to moderate-low population realms.

This isn't a content patch. Content patches have big banners on the WoW website pointing out the new content. Do you see that?
This is the "we need to roll out a new sound engine to fix all kinds of problems in Vista, and we're throwing in voice chat too" patch.
I swear people complain without even knowing what they're complaining about these days.

At least at a glance, it looks like it's a couple of battlegroups, with their mixed arrays. Doomhammer is on there, and it's one of the original servers - crowded enough that it had the threat of a forced server split hanging over it's head a seven, eight months ago.

Interestingly, the 2.2 patch has already downloaded to my client, and is now (one assumes) awaiting the command from its digital overlord to deploy. So I'm guessing next Tuesday is the day.

I am pretty excited about the integrated VoIP. I think it will be used in pugs alot more then WoW insider thinks. LoTRO had VoIP at launch and was just as hard to setup as the wow interface and most pugs were using them when I left the game 2 months ago. It sure made it alot easier PUG. I even saw some pugs in LoTRO require the use of VoIP.

Preliminary downloading isn't always a sign of impending patch day. They send ahead the stuff that's really ready - it could be a lot or a little. That said, I'm hoping for soon too.

I couldn't be any less enthused about a patch that seems to be taking way too long to show up.
Oooh voice chat. I think it's entirely unnecessary except in raids, I'm definitely uninterested in hearing someone whine in a normal instance and/or insist that I get on voice chat on a regular basis. If it's anything like LOTRO, I'll keep it on mute and just lie to people about not having a mic.
the BG AFK thing... probably won't work as well as expected and it's not like people are all testing the idea on PTR servers like they'll have to use it on the real realms. I pity the moron who AFK honor farms on the PTR.
This feels a lot like the 'why bother?' 1.10 patch that just added weather effects that everyone turns off anyway. Hrmph.
