As the world found out this last weekend via
Blizzcon, there are some grand plans in store for
World of Warcraft and
Wrath of the Lich King. One of the many things that was mentioned was the creation of Engineering-based flying mounts. however earlier today we received an email from someone calling themselves "Blizguy" and claiming to have leaked information about the upcoming Engineering mounts that will be featured in
Wrath of the Lich King. Since I love the idea that
Engineering is going to finally get some much-needed love, we figured we'd pass along this rumor.
The claims are that the flying Gyrocopter will actually be a flying siege vehicle, much like the Dwarven Gyrocopters, Dwarvish Flying Machines and
Gnomish Flying Machines from the original Warcraft RTS series. The rest of the rumor claims:
- Will require the max level of Engineering.
- Schematic will be obtained through a series of quests.
- Is a flying siege weapon!
- Will require level 78 to use. (Claims likely will be changed to 80.)
- Will have durability like any other piece of gear, and will require occasional repairs.
My question is, if they're implementing the gyrocopters from the RTS series, will they be slow, heavily armored versions, or zippy but poorly armored flyers? Or perhaps will we see a combination of both with the lighter ones for scouting? In either case, while this is all only unsubstantiated rumors at this point, I have to admit,
zooming in for an attack on a gyrocopter would be a pretty cool addition to PvP. (Never mind that whole "Horde didn't have gyrocopters" thing... heh) And hey, there might actually
finally be a use for that airport outside Ironforge, even if only as a place for quest-givers.

I'd prefer to roll down into Goldshire in a gnomish battle tank, running over small animals and those creepy demon children.
Maybe a Patton-esque clothing set should be include to match it.

What they're not telling you is that one of the materials needed to craft it is a 0.0001% BoP drop from the last boss in a new level 80 40 man raid dungeon, and only in "death knight" mode.

I really doubt if you'll be able to do anything but fly in a flying machine. It's just too easy to grief others when you can zoom in, take a few shots, and zoom out again. It's almost impossible to be killed when you're on a flying mount.
I can see Gnomish Engineers getting Flying Machines (like in WC2 and WC3) but what would Goblin Engineers get? Mini-Zeppelins? Or maybe Jetpacks!
It would be cool if they added some secondary effects to crafted mounts. Maybe they could start out going slowly, but gradually gain speed (and make turning more difficult). Or maybe they could have a chance to give you a speed boost or a slowdown.
So many possibilities! Kinda makes me wish I was still an Engineer.

I saw how bad engineering was a month or so ago and decided there's no way it could go worse - so while it was cheap, I bought all the materials and leveled to 350 JC.
With 2.1's amazing Engineering goggles, and now word these might be coming, I think I made a good choice.

Isn't "BlizzGuy" the one who supposedly leaked info about the next expansion, claiming it was going to include the Maelstrom? I wouldn't put any stock in those rumors until you hear them direct from Blue.

@3 I would disagree. A druid can pop off their mount, do damage to you, then when you fall to your death, they can shift back to bird form and glide to the ground to gloat over your dead body. Priests and Mages can do the same with slow fall. Paladins can stun you causing dismount, then bubble to save from dying. It is very easy to kill a mounted player simply with fall damage.

I just hope like hell that we get the kick-ass soundtracks that came along with them. The Warcraft 2 gnomish flying machine, the goblin sappers, dwarven cannon teams and the Deathknights had some of the absolute BEST sound bytes in almost any game.

Yes...Blizzguy was the one who contacted IGN with the 'leaked' information that was totally incorrect.

"And for your dedication, flying mounts for engineers only will be available in patch 2.3. There will be normal and epic versions of this mount for you to parade around and show how proud you are to have passed all the exams and call yourself an engineer."
