Fishing is a big pain in the ass as it is. At least I can watch TV while I wait for the splash. If I was actually forced to watch my screen and click depending on some meter or something, that would just drive me nuts.

I don't doubt that it needs more "fun" added to it, but just make it better rewards or something...

Even with the latest changes to fishing (20 vs 30 seconds, guaranteed hit), it's still not especially exciting. But that's okay - not all parts of the game have to be full of action and excitement.

The only part that I really hate about fishing is having to click on the bobber at just the right time. I would totally love to be able to map that click to a keypress, so I could position the mouse and wait, patiently, for the hit. If they did that, they could put the timer back to 30 and I wouldn't hardly mind. I'd just sit, line in the water, and get into the whole zen of the moment.....

Yea, I do it while I watch TV or something. Just turn the volume up and put the cursor over the bobber... right-click when it goes splash.

It'd be nice to see more varieties of fish, or maybe some rare fish that give more powerful well fed buffs than their close cousins. Or make it so the longer you fish in an area, the better you are at catching fish that give well fed buffs. Fishing for 2 hours just to get enough Sporefish for a raid gets pretty frustrating.

I just reached 325 in fishing. When i mentioned this to my guildies these were the responses:

1. "OMG do you have nothing better to do?"
2. "Are you on drugs?"
3. "Ughhh can you get mine that high?"
4. "WHY?"

So, fishing definately needs some work. I like that meter idea. That could make the whole process a bit faster.

I think they need to do some sort of constant-feedback type of control scheme for fishing, having some sort of meter requiring you to 'reel in' or give slack at the right moments. I just lose interest between cast & catch so often that I can never get anything done.

I enjoy fishing a lot in real life and wish I could spend more time in-game fishing.

There's something very peaceful and relaxing about the sunlight on the water, the gentle motion of lake, river, or ocean. The soft "thwip" of the line as it's cast out (I'm a fly fisherman myself, but bait casting has a certain amount of fun to it - easier for sitting and drinking, mostly)

Its nice to just find a peaceful spot and fish for 45 minutes or so. I don't consider it grinding, it's just a nice way to spend time. And the cooked fish are good eats too :)

The amount of fish needed to skill up is ridiculous, too. I'm at 7-8 fish per skill. It's taking fooorrreeeevvveerrr. It's not fun, it takes too long to gain skill, and there are no rewards.

But it requires you to pay attention to the bobber, while simultaneously lulling you to sleep.

They need to decide if fishing is functional or fun. If it's functional (and it is almost required for Cooking) then they need to make it a one click affair. When it splashes, the loot window automatically opens and you get your fish/skill. No second click required.

If they want to make it fun, then they need to make it less tedious and more engaging. Half the skill-up time. Implement more collection quests. How about a fish catalog where you can see which fish you've caught and which you're missing? (See: Twilight Princess's bug collection quests, or Animal Crossing's museum aquarium).

Fishing would be more fun if I could use Dwarven Fishing Poles or Goblin Fishing Poles :P

Or like the Draeni Fishing Net quest, chance of pulling mobs out of the water that drop decent loot table stuff, maybe a few particular craft or cook patterns.

I leveled my fishing to 375 for the food and I did it fairly early, as they were good buffs for leveling while your gear was low stated. Now there is enough people fishing that stuff, I just buy the stuff off the AH.

My most recent alt is a hunter. I ought to skill up fishing on that character. I haven't.

I tried to skill up fishing on another alt and failed. Not for want of trying, really - I tried to be conscientious about always dragging out the pole and fishing whenever I was waiting for a boat. This did not work. Eventually, the character levelled up, but the skill acquired by fishing this way did not keep pace with the levels gained in the zones visited. Eventually, all the boats that went where she wanted to go were in waters that exceeded her fishing skill. So fishing fell by the wayside.

And my new hunter is Horde. Not much waiting for boats for that character. Fishing is destined to fall by the wayside on her also.

Personally I love fishing. I think it's the most fun of all the gathering professions. very easy to level, and you can watch tv and make easy money with little attention. Also I'm perfectly happy with not lots of people liking it, higher fish prices for me. :)

I say make a 15 second channeling timer. When the 15 seconds it up, you reel in a fish. No timing required. None of the other profs require skill, why whould fishing. Make it so you just click to cast, and wait it out.

Personally, I would love to see some danger involved in fishing. Something like a random chance to have a shark jump up on shore and eat the fisherman would add a bit more entertainment to it.

Why is it that no matter how good I get at fishing my line seems to go wherever it wants anyway?

Letting me cast at a node instead of casting near a node and hoping would be much less frustrating.

Why is it that I can shoot a monster with a gun from 30yds away with 95% accuracy, but can't cast a line into 4ft circle from < 1ft away with any kind of accuracy? If I missed with my gun as often as I have to recast the line fishing, I'd have to go back to deadmines. Surely 480 fishing should give you that at least.

It makes me think of other games that have fishing. I think the basic ability to fish in the game world should be kept there and the same, but I do think they should add something to it. Like in Breath of Fire games where is a side view and you have to land your hook in a certain point to attract the fish. Or in another game, cannot remember which one, but where it actually requires skill to pull in the fish, not just to hook one. Like pulling at the right time so that the fish doesn't break the line. But those should be side areas, not the main part, that open up as you reach a certain level of skill. You can make a bunch of minigames out of them that reward people, and give additional incentive beyond what you can fish out of water.

I think that Blizzard should change fishing in one of two ways: Have nodes and fishing in general act like other nodes where theres a short gathering channeled and at the end you get the resource

or

Implement some sort of mini-game, have a window pop up and a fishing display occur. The person that mentioned the Zelda fishing (OoT) was right, that was fun!

The STV fishing tournament was a step in the right direction but they should implement more to it or other tournaments.

The catalog idea was cool also, have a list of the best fish we've caught. Have a weight to them and such. New rare fish, different lures for different catches, fishing affected by the time, all this would be great.

Please, leave the skilling up requirements as is! It keeps all those lazy folks from getting their fishing up... And in the meantime I can fish away for motes of water by myself. The only thing I wish was the bob at the end of the timer didn't require a predictive click.

Seriously tho, fishing is such a money maker, and I've learned the appreciate the slower pace at times.

I'm one of those rare folks who enjoys fishing, in moderation. It's not for when I want to get some leveling in, or want to find some new gear. It's for when I just want to sit and be social. Grab a drink (both in game in RL) and sit back to catch a few fish while chatting away.

My absolute favorite time is when I'm trying to get a group together. Since my guild is a bit small-ish, I need to rely on PuGs. I usually have all my consumables that I'll be using and my gear will be repaired, so I'll drop a line in a nearby pond. It's more fun than just sitting at the instance and doesn't put my gear at risk of taking durability reduction.
