So you leveled your main into the late 50s and are ready to jump into the time-sucking goodness that is the Outlands. But before you head in, you want to experience any good pre-BC quest chains you may have missed. One player on the official forums is in this exact situation and wants to know: what quest chain should she do that has good XP and an interesting storyline before heading into the Burning Crusade content? Many players have chimed in so far with their fondly remembered misadventures. Tirion Fordring's Redemption chain out of the Eastern Plaguelands gets many recommendations. As does the Marauders of Darrowshire chain in which you have to find a little girl ghost's missing dolly and along the way relive a critical moment in the history of the lands.
You can also summon a helicopter out of Azshara, get killed on purpose out of Un'goro and learn the history of the Moonkin which takes you to the same area where you can quest for a mechanical yeti. But there is one quest that is getting the most enthusiastic recommendations.
The quest of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands is two very long chains that stand out because they include, as one player puts it, "the chickensuit, draconic for dummies, funny little side bosses like Dr. Weavil, number 2, Azuregos' dialogue, arcanite buoys and so forth." The quest is used to open the gates to Ahn'Qiraj, but it can be undertaken even after the gates have been opened on your server. One warning about this quest: it requires access to the raid instance Blackwing Lair and to be able to kill one of its denizens.
What exciting, interesting or just plain fun quest chains would you recommend to a player before jumping into the Outlands?

I'd have to agree that the Darrowshire quest line is the best quest line pre-BC wise if you're in a smaller guild, or have a static party.

And finally Rakh'likh, Demon where you fight him in an epic battle atop the highest mountain in the Blasted Lands

For any alliance player, especially elves, the "moonkin" quets is a must do !!! From what I remember, it is not a difficult one, since i finished it when my hunter was lvl 57.
Being a horde player for more than a year and a half, my personal favourite (also accessible to allies, I think) would be the "fallen hero of the Horde" quest line near Stonard.
Interesting storyline + good money...

the fallen hero quest chain (it's available to the alliance as well; starts from an npc atop of the mage tower inside the keep in BL) was always a favorite of mine. you gotta travel all over for it, but it really has a solid 'epic quest' type feel to it. some nice rewards along the way and just a ton of xp (or gold) as well.
the moonkin lore escort quest is an all time fave of mine, but it really isn't much of a chain -- just a 'go find npc/escort npc/go to other npc for reward' type thing. still, one of the best lore quests in the game.
btw, geek that i am, i'm still weedling away at the scepter of the shifting sands' quest line. recently got my second shard done, too. in terms of breadth i don;t think blizz ever did anything more expansive than this one.

I've always thought the Onyxia key questline for alliance had a great story. Its kinda a pain due to all the steps in BRD but hey. Windsor is THE MAN.

Much as I dislike Westfall as a zone, the tangle of quests that leads into VC and beyond is the best I've yet seen in WoW. Not a single chain but a sustained story. Worth rolling Alliance at least once to do it.
Is there a Horde equivalent?

my fave alliance chain quest is the one that starts with yekinya in tanaris. you go kill some screechers in feralas, then go to hinterlands and into zul furrak and finally, into sunken temple.

I was always a fan of the Trey Lightforge / Shadow Hold questline in Felwood. It was rather short, but I loved the development of the relationship between Trey and Jessir Moonbrow, the captured night elf whose rescue starts the chain. When you leave Shadow Hold and the ghost of Trey shows up it's classic.
Here's the quest that starts the chain for those interested : http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=5203

I really liked the quest line on the horde side for Paladins to go defile Uthers tomb...
Linken's questline isn't very RP but I liked it as well.

Horde has several equivalent zone-instance tie-ins.
The first is Durotar - Ragefire Chasm. The quest "chain" actually starts at the Valley of Trials, where you uncover evidence of the Burning Blade's activities. After disposing of other minions of the Burning Blade, Thrall sends you to acquire a Lieutenant's Insignia from Skull Rock to go undercover within the Burning Blade. Eventually you enter Ragefire Chasm to do the bidding of both Neeru Fireblade (the leader of the Burning Blade and member of the Shadow Council) _and_ Thrall to foil Neeru's plans.
The second zone-instance tie-in is Barrens - Wailing Caverns. The tauren druids at Crossroads are wondering why certain parts of the Barrens have extraordinarily fast-growing flora and fauna. After a joint Tauren-Forsaken investigation the evidence points to the Wailing Caverns, where you meet both Tauren and Night Elven druids worried about their crazed brethren and their leader, Naralex.
The third tie-in is Silverpine - Shadowfang Keep. The Royal Apothecary Society is interested in the emergence of Worgen in the area and starts to investigate them. In addition, several Forsaken Deathstalkers have gone missing. After decoding the spells used to bind the Worgen, Dalar Dawnweaver (founder of Dalaran?) recognizes the spells and sends you to slay Arugal. You end up finding the Deathstalkers, slaying Arugal and recovering important research data about the Worgen.
One could also say that the Scarlet Monastery "questline" starts all the way back at Deathknell.

Oh oh oh, the Scythe of Elune quest chain! It takes you all the way from Ashenvale to the Eastern Kingdoms, hunting a mythical scythe, uncovering the mystery of a great priestess' disappearance as you go. Great stuff, great stuff indeed.

The class specific quest chains are nice. Specifically all the druid quests(at least up to 20 so far), and the major quests for Paladins at 10, 20, and 60. Very embedded in lore, showing you what it means to be a druid/paladin.
