Hey, it's cerebral humor on the WoW forums! My brain just exploded. Anyway, Hoshizora of Eredar has started a thread in R&D suggesting a new Karazhan opera play: Waiting for Godot. As he puts it, "The curtain opens to two guys standing on stage. They are not attackable. They have a repetitive and confusing conversation for two hours, and then walk offstage and despawn. No loot."
Other players have their own ideas, including the Oh! Calcutta event, where you have to be naked to get loot, and Death of a Salesman, where you must be liked but not well-liked with The Violet Eye to participate.
I can think of a couple myself:
- Pirates of Penzance opera event. The stage fills with hundreds of small, inconsequential yet annoying trash mobs, singing high-pitched but catchy songs. Unfortunately, you can only defeat the event if you are the very model of a modern major General, which makes it tough for Alliance and non-PVPers.
- La Traviata opera event. You can kill the enemies, but instead of looting, you get to listen to them sing about how they're dying for half an hour.
- Music Man opera event. Much like Prince Malchezzar's axes, the main enemy summons seventy-six trombones to brain you.
- Rent opera event: Anyone who has over 1000g on their person is vilified and mocked as a tool of capitalism.
- Cats opera event: Just a lot of level 1 critter cats. There's no loot, but you can kill them as much as you like.
Can you suggest any new opera events?

Have fun with it. Can't kill the mobs as each and every hit roll is a zero. However, every heal is a crit.

Why stick with plays?
The Odyssey quest: It takes about ten years to get attuned to go in, another ten to get through the dungeon where twelve suitors spawn, after you've handedly killed them you get to view your loot, but then you are instantly hated by all factions and can no longer play the game.

At the beginning of the fight, one of the two enemies is wearing a Letter from Hamlet, and that item has to be pickpocketed and read to get a group buff called 'Instructions from the Mad Prince' that allows you to damage Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, thus killing them.
They could have joined attacks, like they flip a coin, and the winner is invincible for the next twenty seconds while the loser takes double damage, or they could summon a boat, and if the boat appears ontop of you you get a debuff called 'Not on a boat' and teleport to a random spot on the stage.

Les Miserables Event- Large barricades made of random trash are built in front of the major cities. Sylvanus sings "On My Own" in the Royal Quarter, and most of the NPCs, instead of walking, perform this odd triangle step in place.
Guys and Dolls Event- Dice rolls have an entirely new meaning and definition, as they can now get you thrown in jail for the duration of the event if a guard NPC sees you. Crap shooting takes place within the Sewers of the Undercity, where the stakes and rewards are high.
Wicked Event- Oh, the fun you can have with this. Dwarfs are renamed as Munchkins. Emerald green outfits are sold at all the major cities. Polymorph turns everyone into Scarecrows, and Slow Fall is renamed "Defying Gravity" for the event.

KIDS Opera Event
A very short event. You all infect each other with a disease that drops your health to 10 HP then to 0 HP very rapidly over the next 10 seconds. Cannot be cured/cleansed/dispelled. No loot. The raid wipes. Utter misery.
But Chloë Sevigny shows up towards the end so it's ok I guess..

Although it's not a play (and really Little Red Riding Hood is more a fairy tale and Wizard of Oz were a series of books.) I really do like the idea of Alice in Wonderland.
The twist is, though, that it's set up as an "escort" style quest. You have to help a little girl named "Alissa" survive waves of monsters. She has a few special abilities.
She has a few "small cakes" that cause her to shrink down and cause enemies to stop targetting her.
She has a small vial which she can drink to make her grow large, cause her to do a lot of damage, and replenish her hitpoints.
A vorpal blade: Only can be used in the last fight.
First wave: Mad Hatter, March Hare
Second Wave: Chesire Cat, Queen of Hearts.
Third Wave: Jabberwock. Must use the Vorpal Blade when it's hitpoitns are below 10% or it will regenerate.

Can't believe no one has mentioned this.. Phantom of the Opera.. I think it was be so totally cool.. Chandeliers falling randomly and glass crashing as an AOE. The phantom could be a combination mage/warlock and use every tool at his discretion.. Super cool music playing.. wow..

An Inspector Calls: An NPC in turn revels a random 5 player's rules breaching in the past to the whole raid.
Starlight Express: Two Tonks race around the stage in circuits. The Electric powered Tonks moves faster than the Steam Tonk. You must use snares on the Electric Tonk so the Steam Tonk wins. Thus proving in the world of Tonks that Steam > Electric.

Hänsel & Gretel - you must trick the witch into the fire before a timer runs down and Hänsel dies in the fire.
Sleeping Beauty - the hedge would be dozens of treeants or bog/fen lords, and you would have several princes trying to kiss the bride first, and of course the 13th aunt/witch.
Snow White and the seven Dwarves - the dwarves try to protect Snow White, and the evil stepmother steps in last. Effects might be sleep or choking on apple chunks.

You could do a lot with "Carmen", one of my favs. A torrid, forbidden love affair, jealousy, murder, drunkeness, devastation. She worked in a tobacco factory....a major law suit perhaps? This uplifting tale could apply to a lot of current people/topics in the news.
