The list of famous fans is getting longer as World of Warcraft becomes more and more popular. The first famous names I remember hearing about were a whole slew of cartoonists whose work I really enjoy: Roman Dirge (Lenore), Jhonen Vasquez (JTHM), Scott Kurtz (PVP Online), Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins (Penny Arcade), and Tim Buckley (Ctrl+Alt+Del). Now, being a long-time comic book geek myself, these guys didn't really surprise me when they said that they were playing World of Warcraft. After all, video games and comics are generally thought of as sharing space in the realm of the Geek. One of the next names did take me a bit by surprise -- that was when comedian Dave Chappelle proclaimed his love for WoW. After that, it was just a mattter of time. Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) admitted that he was a total WoW fan. Then he showed in an Eastvale Logging Camp t-shirt to the Video Game Awards, and got to introduce the world premiere of the Burning Crusade trailer to the rest of the world.
But this most recent name added to the ranks is a new one to me. World of Warcraft has just gained a professional football player as a fan. In a recent interview with Nick Smith, the newly recruited offensive lineman for the New York Jets, WoW came up as a topic and he talked about his time in Azeroth. Or at least, said that he had been playing WoW until Burning Crusade came out.
Yeah... I stopped playing when the expansion came out because I just couldn't keep up. Last summer though, I was like that guy in the South Park episode. I could kill anyone over and over again until they quit. It was awesome. That was pretty much all I did: eat, workout and play WoW.
While I'm thrilled to see someone in professional sports join the WoW gamer fold, I honestly hope that he was just joking about being like any guy in a South Park episode. There are just certain images that really don't need to conjured up. O.o
How about you? Do you know of any other famous names who play World of Warcraft?

Dear god, you put Jhonen Vasquez and Tim Buckley in the same sentence WITHOUT a sense of disgust, the Goths are going to go nuts.
Last I recall Tim had left WoW for EVE, but not before kicking every single person he could out of the guild he created on Dark Iron (he wasn't GM at the time, he'd already left a week earlier and made someone else GM). Nice one, Tim.

"eat, work out and play WoW"
One of those three things counters the other two. Which one is it?

You missed cartoonist Bill Amend, who draws Foxtrot. He's done many strips about WoW, or as he calls it in the strip, World or Warquest.

Don't forget Eric Bloom from Blue Oyster Cult. There was a whole interview with him about playing WoW in the first issue of Massive Online Gamer.

@ Ecko_18 - Jhonen hasn't written a WoW comic that I'm aware of. I want to say he did a sketch of Roman's undead warlock that looked kind of like one of the Almighty Tallest from Zim, but that's it. (He and Roman played together on a PVP server as memory serves.)
@ Savok - Thankfully, I'm already crazy. ;) Yeah, I considered leaving him out. However, he did enjoy WoW at one point and he is still the creator of a well-known webcomic.
@ Tiforix - Bill Amend finally said for certain he had an account? Very cool. I laughed really hard when I saw Doomulus Prime as a quest reward in Silithus.
@ Carnifern - I didn't know that about BOC. Very cool.

This isn't WoW but I always find it interesting when celebs admit to playing online games. Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel admit to playing a lot of internet Scrabble. Sarah says she also plays a lot with Alyssa Milano who lives in the same building as her.

Not really a celeb except to Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, but Felicia Day, who played Vi, one of the Potentials in seasons seven, is a serious WoW player.

I'm not exactly famous but my best friend and I play WOW and we are Auburn Football players. My friend is trying out for the pros right now and I'll be doing the same next year if all goes well. We WOW athletes are few and far between, but proud members of the Horde.

Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling has to be mentioned here. To quote from his blog (http://38pitches.com/):
"I played EQ, and was addicted. I played EQ2, and was addicted. I jumped on the WoW band wagon very late and really like the game. Blizzard did so many things right, and the game is so well done, that it’s hard not to like.
I am now playing Vanguard and hats off to Brad McQuaid. Even though the game was pushed out the door 6 months too early I am enjoying the game a lot more than I thought I would."
He enjoys MMORPGs so much, he's formed a company (http://www.38studios.com/) that's supposed to eventually come out with an MMORPG of its own.

To add to what Cisko said about Curt Schilling and 38Studios, there are two other big names involved in that company - Comic legend Todd McFarlane and Fantasy Novelist R. A. Salvatore. I don't know how much McFarlane is into gaming, but I do have a friend who has adventured with Salvatore back in the original EverQuest.
Another celebrity that has publicly admit to his love for gaming (and for Warcraft specifically) is action star Vin Diesel. I don't have any information as to what server or character race/class he prefers, however.
