If you're a jewelcrafter (or just want to find some good gems to stick in your armor-- and who doesn't?), you'll probably find these two little online jewelcrafting applications invaluable.First off, Xornot's Gem Finder by Xornot of Gorefiend is an awesome little application that lets you browse through all the gems in the game (so far-- I'm not a jewelcrafter, so I don't know if it's completely up-to-date) according to socket color, stat bonuses, crafting or vendoring, and even by name. All of the gems are color coded, and because Xornot is apparently a l33t web coder, everything is Ajaxy smooth. Very cool tool for finding just the right gem for that shiny new epic you just picked up.
Jesta has also created a jewelcrafting tool that may not look quite as shiny as the first one, but in fact goes a little farther-- not only can you browse all the gems in the game (by base gem, color, or class appropriateness), but it looks like eventually, jewelcrafters will be able to log in, list the gems they can make, and even list prices for prospective buyers on the server. It's kind of like a custom online auction house listing for jewelcrafting. Unfortunately, there's no date listed for functionality, and it seems like Jesta is a little too busy working on all kinds of other things to get it up and running, but we'll throw a hug his way and thank him for the great online app.
The 2.1 changes will bring a little more order to the auction house in terms of gems, but until then (and even afterwards), these tools look really useful for both prospectors and their customers.

I prefer to use GemList instead of out of game sites.

And I am a AJAX programmer myself so I should somehow find some clues to it if there where any.
Only thing that may be referred to as AJAX (that I found on the Site so far) is the script.aculo.us Framework that can do some shiny effects I haven't seen somewhere.
If it would be AJAX you wouldn't need to refresh the whole page, the page would basically alter itself without you noticing.
Everything you click triggers a page-reload. So I somehow doubt there is any AJAX involved in the process, there aren't even any mouseover effects you where Information for the Mouseover is async loaded.
For the gems, the whole thing looks pretty mutch like a Ruby on Rails application (now that's something cool, not the non-existing AJAX).
But I somehow don't really like the site. I mean, you can pretty mutch do the same thing on WoWhead by creating applying filters on the gem-category.
Maybe Xornoth's Site is probably better to find particular gems for a special socket whatever, but I either use ingame tools like #2 noted or prefer to use wowhead with some filters.

It is an -ingame- addon which shows what you can cut based on filters of: gem name, colour, stats or materials.
It also allows you to see what gems you can craft based on what materials are currently in your bags.
And finally, it replaces the tradeskill window for Jewelcrafting so you can cut gems directly from GemHelper instead of having to open your JC menu too!
Written by my guild's GM. It's an awesome mod which also includes French and German localisation.

Tigraine is almost 100% right: there's no AJAX involved, at least not in the public part of the site. I should actually remove those files from the site's public template since they aren't used.
The site is dynamic, with server-side caching, which explains the "smoothness". Requests which have been made in the past are served much quicker than new requests. Since everybody's looking for the same things (almost), there are very few cache-misses.
Ideally, I would have written this to be an in-game addon, but it was actually part of a grander scheme to show something to a client. Anyways, glad to see that it's helpful!
