Multiple sources, including our buddies at Joystiq, are reporting that Blizzard is bringing a big surprise to their World Wide Invitational event, held in South Korea on May 19. And the rumors say that the surprise is none other than Starcraft 2. As in a new race, lots of changes to existing units, and a glorious return to Blizzard's RTS brilliance. It may not be, of course. Blizzard hasn't confirmed anything yet (of course they haven't), except to say that they will be making a big announcement then. They have talked about Starcraft 2 before, and if they're going to release a new Starcraft anywhere, it might as well be in South Korea. But of course the next WoW expansion has to be announced sometime, and Diablo 3 has been going through the rumor mills for a long time, too.
No matter what Blizzard announces, you can bet it'll be seen in some form (hopefully playable... drool) at Blizzcon in August. And then whatever it is, considering Blizzard is making it, we'll probably see it on store shelves in early 2015.

That would certainly be a welcome change of pace. I love a good RTS, and Starcraft was a great RTS.

There's nothing on the US trademarks site about it...so I say it's either been given a code name or it's just speculation.

Edit: Although apparently there were plans a few years ago about making it into a movie...

Oh cool. So if they announce SC2 in May 2007 that means we should see it released around 2115.

This is perhaps the best news I have heard in the last few years. A good return to the RTS genre for Blizzard IMO. I still play the original and short of them completely screwing it up, which isn't likely, I look forward to many days spent playing the sequel.
Reading round and knowing that this is as much a rumor as anything else, it is an obvious still for Blizzard to return to. Anything else aside from Diablo 3 or something would be lackluster. Hopefully they are staying mum about it just to keep the mill churning.

I think we can assume the Diablo III isn't happening. WoW essentially took all of the good ideas from the franchise and applied them to the Warcraft universe which has a much richer mythology.
I just can't imagine how a Diablo III would be different than WoW.

I'm not going to hold my breath on anything new from Blizzard. I'm still a bit saddened that they canned Starcraft: Ghost without any explanation why.

From this comment from Blizzard looks like it ain't a Starcraft game...
We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present.
can't remember where I read it ... but I vaguely recall an interview with a Blizz "Higher up" saying they were planning on working towards NEW IP (intellectual property)
meaning (by my guess) a completely new mythology

I'd rather have Diablo 3 personally. (And definitely NOT World of Diablo.)

It's clearly not Starcraft people...Read what he wrote...It will be D3...Too much going on...Both games are great but I can guarantee it is D3 from everything that blizz has done in the past 6 months...The writer of the Diablo series said I am not writing for a dead game....Starcraft Ghost was postponed indefinately in 2006...Blizzard is not going to jump back to that game...Why would they do that right now? Think of it this way...Starcraft 9 million copies sold...Diablo 2 18 million!!! Which game would you make? They even put a diablo card in the WoW card game...Try going to Diablo3.fr and that will take you to blizzards site!!! Besides that korean RPG company is about to announce their games coming to the US...Do you think blizzard like that? No so they are going to shock the world
