My little blood elf pally has finally hit 40 and got her free mount, and with it comes a new goal -- collecting the entire Chain of the Scarlet Crusade set from Scarlet Monastery.
I probably would have never thought of doing it until I got the only BOP part of the set during my first Cathedral run. Then I got the Aegis of the Scarlet Commander and Herod's Shoulder, and realized that I was starting to look pretty cool. At that point, it became a quest. I knew it would be difficult -- and that I'd even have to go back at 70, most likely -- but I still want to do it.
As I write this, I'm off to tag along in Armory with a 70 rogue from my guild who is doing silk farming in hopes of getting the Ravager or the mail helm from Herod. All in all, I only need the helm, chestpiece and boots to look like a real Scarlet Crusader. The tabard would be nice but not necessary. The boots are extremely rare, so I'm either going to have to do a lot of farming or plunk down some money from my epic flying mount fund. But it'll be worth it when I can stand in the lobby of Scarlet Monastery and taunt the Alliance. Hmm, the Ashbringer would also be a nice fit ...
Have you ever wanted to collect the full set of something, whether it be from BRD or Naxx? Have you ever bought an item just because it was cool to have it?

I had a white tauren druid that collected the entire Fang set from the Wailing Caverns. With the Crescent Staff, some purple shoulders, and a gold cape, he actually looked pretty good.

I almost got the entire Scarlet set except for the chestpiece.
This probably isn't as impressive as a real set but I collected all the Bonelink (of the Monkey or Agility) items for my hunter. Very sexy and albino. I plan to stick with the armor until level 50-ish.

Yeah, the Defias set is still something I've been trying to collect on the side. My rogue is 63 and I still want it. As for newer sets, it would be nice but it's nothing a casual player can obtain.
My first toon is a human warrior on Moonrunner. I had the full Green Armor set. If it was red, I would have looked like a cooked lobster.

I did collect the whole Scarlet set on my warrior (except for the tabard)...but at that time the warrior was so close to wearing plate that i soon after stored away in the bank. My reason for collecting them? I love Scarlet Monestary, my favorite instance ever since i first started playing and a good friend ran me through. But on my main (70 druid) im workin on the moonglade set....but thats more for function than fashsion.

I am collecting the hallowed set on my lvl 70 warrior. Currently have the Chest and Shoulders. It goes great with the purple "T2" pally helm. I am going to have the most +healing of any warrior on the server! The sad part is that my shadow priest has 0/5 hallowed...

I still have my Defias set in the bank for my Druid. I break it out in Shattrath sometimes just to see the looks I get. :)
I've also got a set of Buccaneer's gear for my Warrior to make her look like a Pirate, and some nice sandals to wear with my Festival Dress that look suitably asian. :)
I'm shooting for the Scarlet Chain set on my Shaman when she hits her mid 30s so that I'll be able to wear it at 40. :P

I just finished getting an entire set of gear with the "Blood Knight" prefix on it. (well, not the purple Blood Knight war cloak - she's just wearing a black and gold cloak I got as a quest reward). I used 3 of the pieces as my main gear for a few levels between 60 and 70, and thought it looked really hot on my blood elf girl, so I went to the AH to see if I could buy the rest of the pieces and to see what they looked like. The whole thing looked absolutely awesome put together, so once I had more than plenty of gold for my flying mount, I blew 30g on the rest of the pieces I was missing (except the helm, since I never show my helm). I only ever wear it when I'm goofing around in town, though it's high enough level that I can (and have) gotten away with wearing it while grinding ogres in Nagrand. I really ought to get a screenshot of my toon wearing it.

Gotta agree on the Scarlet Set. I'd love it too. Looks nice. Imagine putting that set on, then declaring war on the Argent Dawn and attacking them in WPL/EPL, as a Scarlet Mercenary. Or even in Shattrath, warning everyone of the corruption of the Argent Dawn.

I have my ghetto homemade fashion set.
Mug O' Hurt http://www.wowhead.com/?item=4090 in main hand
Wirt's Third Leg http://www.wowhead.com/?item=9359 in offhand
Stylin' Purple Hat http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25680 on head
Purple Dinner Suit (From valentines day event) [won't let me include a third link] as clothing.
If anyone has suggestions for gloves, shoulders, or boots that work with this, please do tell.

I know this post is old and out-dated, but I'll share anyways.
I spent quite a long time gathering the "Ironhide..." set for my hunter. I looked up a lot of uncommon mail pieces and tried them on when the dressing room option was patched into the game, but nothing said "Whoa!" like Ironhide. I still get compliments traveling around Shattrath and other major cities because it just looks amazing. Kudos to whichever designer put so much effort into a set of gear comprised of random drops.
Nice thing is, the stats on the pieces I have work really well with the hunter class. So I also sort of lucked out on the pieces I had to purchase.

Just missing the gloves of the 5-piece Beast Lord set, which is the Dungeon Tier 3 for my hunter. Now starting Kara raids to get Tier 4 gear. Some Cryptstalker (Tier 3 old content) are still relevant/better than what I have but I can't find peeps to go run raids to get them,
