It's that wonderful time of the year when grey skies turn blue, brown trees turn green, and blue items turn purple. As more mid-level guilds step into Karazhan and heroic instances and the top guilds head for the 25-mans, people are beginning to get items that could be described as "end-game." Unfortunately, with end-game gear comes the responsibility to maximize your gear -- which means enchantments, high-quality gems, and other enhancements.
Before Burning Crusade, it was pretty easy to decide when to get serious about enhancing your gear. Unless you joined an AQ40 raiding guild while still in greens, you got the best gear enchants as your items became epic, since you were probably going to be using that gear for a while. You knew that you were going to get your Tier 1, Tier 2, and then so on, and since you had to split the loot with 40 other people, it was probably best to just enchant everything. (Although not everyone did this -- I knew a rogue who used a Vis'kag with a Lifestealing enchant on it for most of BWL because he refused to get Crusader until the Chromatically Tempered Sword dropped for him.)
But now the alternate routes of gear progression means you have to make certain choices. Should you enchant the epics you're getting from heroics, or wait for Karazhan or your tier gear? What about your crafted epics, or very good blues? Fully tricking out a piece of gear -- including enchants, gems, spellthread/leg armor for pants and purchased enhancements for head and shoulders -- can run into many hundreds of gold.
Currently, I'm getting minor/free enchants and cheap gems for my blue items, and springing for the slightly better stuff for my small collection of epics. When my schedule opens up to permit more raiding, I'll probably start enchanting everything. What is your threshold for really tricking out your gear?

Our guild's jewelcrafter is more than happy to make us any gem we want, what with all the raw gems we send him, so I'm usually sporting green or blue gems on all my socketed gear, regardless of quality. The only enchant I'm planning to get is a +spell dmg to my dagger that drops from the ogre boss in Shattered Halls (I forget the name of it) because I think I'll be using it for awhile.

I agree, No use throwing around lots of money when you're gonna get better epic items soon. Although, There are plenty of enchants and gems out there that can be affordable, if not free, from guildies and such. Enchant and Gem if it's feasible, but until you get your "end game" stuff.... Don't bother.

If it is good enough to equip, it is good enough to enchant. Every item I put on has some form of enchant on it.

When I get a new piece of gear, I do searches to see if there is anything better that's easily available. If there isn't anything, I enchant it with the best enchant and put the best blue gem into the sockets.
I figure, what the hell, I have 3k gold and don't really need the epic flyer. I'd rather be successful by being the best I can be than having a fat bank account.
With all that said, I only got a few cheap enchants and no gems before I hit 70.

I agree entirely with poster #4. I did not bother to enchant or socket any of my items until 70. After I hit 70, I started looking at the best gear that I could get off world drops and quests. I got the gear and enchanted it with at least a low level enchantment. Now that I am hitting the level 70 instances more often, I will enchant the best gear available out of those instances for me. As a Paladin, I will enchant each of my sets (Ret set, healing and tanking set). So far, that method has made me a far better and more versatile Paladin when I need to fill a role. I'm sure the same method could be used for any other class in WoW.

Mages don't normally rotate their main weapon often, so getting the +40 dmg enchant or +22 intel enchant is usually worthwhile.

After BC came out, I started a new character on a PVP server. Since this is the second character I leveled, I knew where to quest and where to look for good gear.
I started a BE, so I have some gear that was unavailable before as well. Some of it is really good considering the lvl I was when I got it. I have a dagger thats +5 stam at lvl 21, and while I am sure there are better daggers/swords/staves out there, I haven't found one yet.
I also just got my enchanted gold bloodrobe (look it up if you don;t know what it is). On my last lock, I got rid of it at lvl 50 for a green robe that had just slightly better stats.
I also have a cape and an offhand orb that are really good. What I am considering is having these items enchanted to make lvling to at least 58 easier, at which point outland greens will take over. And since the expansion, the AH for low lvl items hasn't been nearly as good as it used to. While looking for a replacement for my dagger on the AH, only ones I could find that interested me were lvl 59+ requirement.

I find that trading with guildmates a good way to always enchant your stuff. Swamp system rules.
I do hate when an enchanter is offering up services...and when you reach them they either ignore you (when no one is around) or log off.

I'm going with the guild route for gems/enchantments.
Many JCs and Enchanters are still trying to level to 375 and are more then willing to help a guildie so they can go up a level.
I'm a LW so i try to put an armor kit on, unless i don't have enough cobra scales / heavy clefthoof on me or the guild enchanter is online and nearby.
I have decided i won't actively look for and purchase specific enchants or gems until. i have my BoP / DS3 / Tier 3 mishmash.

Im a enchanter so pretty much to lvl to 375 i enchanted my gear to the max neways - despite how noob/good it was.
I cant stress enuf the importance of enchants etc. They make a MASSIVE difference to dmg/healing etc. My enchants alone are sometimes half of another persons dmg. Even if u dont have the best item u can get - enchant it, coz u'll never know when u will pick up that upgrade.
Take a look at my profile and u will see what i am getting at.

@11 wow, you're pretty pimped out. Good call with all those enchants, I think. You probably won't replace much until you get a couple pieces into T4/5.

I'm a bit of an enchant slut - I've already tossed +40 dmg on 3 blue weapons (lvl 70 HWL blade - resilience set, Keepers of Time revered sword - stam/dmg set, Bringer of Death - crit set). I've been putting off the non +dmg enchants though (or using the pre-TBC versions); probably until i start hitting heroics and getting some starter epics.
With the gems though, I've been sticking with the green ones; 2g for a +6 crit gem and 60g for a +8 crit gem; not worth it unless you're pretty darn sure that the next upgrade is a long ways away.

Same as #4. I use addons like AtlasLoot and sites like Thottbot to see what's up ahead. If it looks like I won't be getting anything better for some time, I'm willing to put a little more money into it.

Being an enchanter myself I always put on the best enchant on every single piece of my gear.
Ok, I am 70 already and got a lot of gold... free flight form for druids made me a rich guy.
I have to admit though that I receive a lot of primal life from my guild as I am the raid's tree ^^

I also enchant my current gear to the maximum, regardless of green/blue/purple. Currently saving for the +dmg enchant on bracers.
But I am an enchanter myself, which makes it easier to get and spend the mats.

With the current itemization even most karazhan loot is a sidegrade to certain blue drops and quest rewards. Because of that, I've held off on enchanting the majority of my gear. I have, however, put quite a few high end gems (+9 spell dmg) in my gear as i'm a miner and have a decent stockpile of gems. Also, our guild is lucky enough to have the only 2 people on our server horde side that can craft those +dmg gems. So it'd really be a waste not to take advantage of something like that!

anyone who wants to raid should be fully stacked with appropriate enchants. thats not to say a rogue with a decent questblue dagger should get mongoose ofc, but he should get something on it, even though its there for a week or less.
when ppl DONT bother doing this, the rest of their grp has to make up the loss of healing/dps on pots. so that person is costing the others alot of cash.
anyone wants to raid needs to consider this above themselves.

I always have all my stuff enchanted. Cheap items get cheap enchants, good items get good enchants.
There was a conversation about this in gchat last week, and someone said: "I'm not going to enchant my gear till I get better gear" to which someone else replied "I enchant all my gear in order to get better gear"
