It always amazes me that many rogues never bothered to level up their lockpicking. It particularly amazes me when a level 70 rogue shoves a lockbox into my trade window, or I run into a rogue standing helplessly with a group outside of Arcatraz, totally locked out. So as an emergency service to the rogue community, Roguetastic presents Five Reasons To Level Lockpicking To 350.
- You never have to get your Shattered Halls, Arcatraz, or Shadow Labs keys. In fact, you can stand outside the door and charge unprepared groups to let them in. Or if you're nice, you can do it for free and get a reputation for goodwill on your server. Perhaps you can even form a guild called <Doorman> and wear a tuxedo. You can also shock your Shattered Halls group by picking the door leading to the first boss. All the groups I was in just headed down to the sewer, not even considering that I could pick it.
- You can get a largely endless supply of blinding powder by picking the junkboxes you get from pickpocketing humanoid mobs. You can also sometimes find some neat stuff in them, like gnome effigies.
- You can make a good amount of money by just announcing "Picking all lockboxes free, tips appreciated!" while standing around in Ironforge, Orgrimmar or Shattrath. Sure, there'll be a cheapskate or two that doesn't tip, but there's always that one guy who tips, like, two gold for one lockbox. Maybe he's drunk.
- You can be nice and open locked chests in instances. I open them for my groups with the reasonable "fee" of me being allowed to take anything that would really be an upgrade for me, which never ever happens. On the other hand, if you're in some jerky pug with a priest that announces that all rogues are useless, a tank who can't hold aggro for anything in the world, a mage who pyroblasts your saps, and a warlock who's AFK half the time, feel free to announce that you can't pick the chest. Wait for them all to hearth out and then sneak back and take it. Consider it a "jerk fee."
- It takes about fifteen minutes to level from 300. Just go to the broken camp in the south of Zangarmarsh, sneak around, and pick all the little chests. It's as easy as pie!
Have you found any other good reasons to level your lockpicking? Ever find something cool in a locked chest?

I started a rogue recently, but haven't gotten the lockpicking skill yet (been slow to lvl this character). Any tips on the best way to skillup lockpicking (other than doing free lockpicks like most do)?

For lockpicking from 0-300, there are several guides in places online, but the general consensus is:
Lockpicking quest for 0-100
(Alliance) Chest at poison quest for 100-175
Scarlet Monestary doors for 175-250
From 250-280 you are on your own...pickpocket mobs while grinding to get lockboxes, or open stuff in Ironforge for others.
280-300 can easily be done from the doors in Blackrock Depths, just pick them all and reset the instance.

Gnome effigys are awsome. I'm a gnomish rogue, and I keep at least one on me at all times for luck. I've also come across A Steamy Romance novel before. Picked it off an ogre. I LMAO at that one. Plus without lockpick groups won't have access to the locked chests in instances. I would like to see more uses for lockpick and pickpocketing though. Some quests required me to find a blacksmith or leatherworker. Why can't there be a quest to pickpocket a key from someone, and thats the only way to get it? Or have more locked doors that a rogue can pick in instances to shorten it, or a door that has no key, and you NEED a rogue to open it. These things would solve our abandonment issues from not being invited to raids and 5 mans anymore.

I used the list on WowWiki. It has a nice listing on lockboxes at different locations, etc to lock for skill. It worked great for me. Now I just need to get to 300 to unlock all of these damn Strong Lockboxes I pickpocketed.

I love saying I can't open the chest and then running back once they've hearthed out. I don't do it with the guild or friends, but really don't feel bad at all when I do it to a PUG... And since so many people don't expect the rogue to have leveled lockpicking they don't question you when you say no...

For every bracket of lockpicking you can usually find a skillup zone (I think your trainer gives you clues where to go). These zones either include practice boxes, that have fast respawn rates, or an extra number of regular chests/lockboxes in the region. Basically, you just take some time out of questing to go and level it up.

@ #1 - Make pickpocketing humanoids a habit. You'll get a fair number of lockboxes out of it over the course of a level. Do your best to keep up learning the 5 new points every level. If you max out and get more "yellow" or better lockboxes, keep 5 in the bank for your next ding so you have an instant jump on those next 5 points.

I think a good guide to raising your LP skill would be great, but man this article is craptastic more than Roguetastic. Are you guys dredging for things to write about, or what?
5 good reasons? I can think of 2:
Opening locked boxes.
Opening locked doors.
Can you think of anything else you've ever had to unlock?
"You can also sometimes find some neat stuff in them, like gnome effigies."
You're kidding, right? Gnome effigies? The stupid gray drops that come off of almost every trash mob in Zangarmarsh that vendor for almost nothing? WTF is neat about those?
Seriously guys, this is bottom of the barrel writing at best. You don't even bother to mention that your LP skill is limited by level, so unless you're level 70, you can't even REACH an LP of 350 - and if you're level 70 with a LP of 300, you're an idiot.

Thanks to some excellent changes in the mechanics of pickpocketing when client 2.0 came out, it's now possible to "invisibly" (in terms of effort) pick-pocket a mob (those that have pockets at least!) every time you perform your normal opening move from stealth. It's all about auto-looting, macros and the following simple magic...
First, go to the interface options menu and turn on the "Auto Loot Corpse" option. You need this. (Don't worry - this means you pickup more junk but will not ninja roll-for items.)
Now, go to the macros menu and make a new macro.
I'd recommend picking the same icon for the macro as the move you're going to replace.
Use the following code for a cheapshot replacement...
/cast Pick Pocket
/stopcasting
/cast Cheap Shot
...and this for a sap replacement...
/cast Pick Pocket
/stopcasting
/cast Sap
...and this for a garrote replacement...
/cast Pick Pocket
/stopcasting
/cast Garrote
...and drag the macro items onto your hotbars etc in place of the abilities they are replacing. Then, out you go into the big wide world making a tonne of cash.

FiG,
I never thought about that! lol I'm soo gonna do that on my next instance run ^_^
And to all who say it's wrong to do that, well why should we rogues share anything with anyone that we and we only are able to get?? i don't make a miner mine an ore for me if i find it first and i'm NOT a miner.
"OH no! i found that node first! its mine!...just mine it for me and gimme!"
ya....exactly......
locked boxes are our property and we can do what we want with them as we see fit ^_^

B/c you went in with a GROUP - you didn't get it all by yourself, you had to have 4 other people keep your butt alive up until that point. You sure didn't come into the instance alone, did ya? If YOU are only able to get it, stealth in and take it. Otherwise you're still just a ninja, and an embarrassment to the gaming community as a whole.

>(Alliance) Chest at poison quest for 100-175
I did the quest, and now when I go to this chest, it's not clickable anymore. Can't pick it, can't even select it. Am I missing a step here?

Well, these comments sure show off why Rogues are not wanted in Instances.
No Lockpicking, No Improved Sap? Why should would you ever bring this character along in a group? Any other DPS class would be better.
