Players on each realm are required to have unique character names -- which can be an annoyance if you didn't create on the day the realm opened. Whenever a new realm is launched, common and popular names are quickly used up, and at some point naming becomes an annoyance. (Even more of an annoyance when people attempt to take a name they want by inserting special characters -- I've yet to figure out how to invite some of them to groups.) For my part, my most often played characters are "Lizzy" (uncreative, I know, but I created soon after the realm launched and grabbed it), "Blush" (which seemed to me the perfect name for an undead rogue), "Raawr" (a druid, and the only spelling I could find that worked), and "Coraline" (a book character whose name never seems to be taken).
So what's your character name -- and how did you pick it? Do you have some uncommon standbys that are usually free? Do you abuse the random name generator until you find something you like? Do you just hit random keys on your keyboard?

My main character's name is Airwave. It's a long time pen name of mine, which I made up 4 years ago because back then I was a big fan of the bubble gum brand "Airwaves". It's stupid, yes, but as it's been my pen name for so long, it's too much of a bother to make up a new one.
My undead priest however has a better name: Darkhallow. I stole the name from a Death Knight in Warcraft III.
My warrior twink's name is Slashtrain, named after the emote. As twinking is kind of stupid (but I like it), I decided to give the guy a stupid name. My shaman twink also has a stupid name: Bigbadwolf.

Shardstorm. I just liked it. Having two words combined like that is a naming technique I've always liked and it usually produced a good combination that is avaliable. Now i try to end my alts with Storm. Etherstorm is my BE warlock.

I like to look at a bunch of names from there, and find parts of names that I like, and piece them together. Several names I've made that way: Kasayi, Naviv, Enissis. And then there's my hunter Wootcakes, who I made while highly sleep deprived, and thus gave the best name ever.

My troll hunter Gregger, named after one of my dead-beat uncles. A human rogue (my first and last alliance) named Roads, dumb yeah, but its one of my favorite Blindside songs. A BE rogue named Ellwood, from the blues brothers.

For me, I just go to Wikipedia and hit "random article" until I find something I like.
A Bokor is a voodoo person who can raise dead bodies and stuff, so I'm and undead warlock.
My brother's name, Berith, is a commander of hell leading a few dozen legions of demons, I thought that was kind of cool, so he's an undead warrior.

belf mage Albatross is my latest. I wanted a normal word so its easy to invite me. I hate it when I have to alt-keypad to invite people with wacky characters in their name.

Blood Elf Rogue named Sunstroke.
Made sense to me, lore wise.
Tauren Druid named Baratrill that just seemed like a tauren name.

My main's name is Lipari, I've used it before, back in my college days when I had a neopet, haha. I picked it randomly out of the glossary in the Aeneid, I recently also found out its the name of a city in sicily (i think)which is fitting because my Draenei Pally is named Larag after an ancient sumerian city meaning "house of Light".
My only name regret is when BC first came out I made a bloodelf mage named Sephyroth as a joke but when I started playing him, I really liked him. He never made it past level 13 though because now I'm too embarassed to sign on with him..haha oh well..

I put all my UD chars name with Tainted at the start and something else to go with it........as for Elves im not bad at making up names like for my BE pally Valethas and Illtrana for my NE Druid.......but as for most other races besides Trolls (VoodooCasta 22 Shaman) and maybe Orcs (Gorshack) i pretty much suck at names

I name all my characters after Norwegian words or gods that have something to do with the character I'm making. For instance, my Dwarf hunter's name is Bergmal, which means mountains while his white wolf's name is Fimbulvetr, which translates to "terrible winter."
If I can't find something in Norwedgian translation, I go to babynames.com. I named my Draenei Pally Indivar, which means "blue lotus."

My main is Ollej (Jell-o spelled backwards). My Alts are Mehrunes (Evil boss in Oblivion), Johnmadden (self explanatory, I get lots of positive reactions on this one, especially if I say "BAM!" or "BOOM!" in any chat), and Jackthompson (I don't chat with this character, I just wait for people to hate me when they see my toon).

I also meant to mention, one of my friends has a funny naming convention: He includes his name in each of his characters names. For example, his main is "Notoriousbob" (pronounced Notorious B-O-B), he has alts named Incredibob, Unbelievabob, Notsilentbob, and Bobcostas (which goes along with my alt, Johnmadded; our guild also has an Almichaels and are currently recruiting somebody who wants to name a character Joebuck, or any other famous sports announcers -- send a tell to me or Notoriousbob if you want to be a sports announcer in the "Angry Penguins" of Kargath).

I graduated from the University of New Mexico where everyone is a a Lobo (woof! woof! woof!) so when I needed to pick a name for Diablo I tried "Lobo" which was of course, taken. So, I became LoboJim. My next char was a female, so she became Lobette. That has carried over to WoW. I got stuck on the "bo" part of lobo. So, in addition to LoboJim my main, and Lobette, my warrior alt, most of my alts are "bo".
Slybo - Rogue
Bisbo - Priest (and bishop in portuguese)
Mudabo - Druid (mudar, to change in portuguese)
Luzbo - Pally (luz is light in portuguese)
Belfbo - Mage (guess which race...)
Torobo - Shamen (guess which race)
and the black sheep
Vargulf - undead warlock - from the old german for warewolf.
