When Ventrilo goes wrong
Ventrilo, Teamspeak, and other voice chat programs can be a great tool for coordinating raids. They can also be a great tool for inappropriate comments to completely wipe an otherwise normal raid. This definitely-not-safe-for-work and possibly-your-sanity Vent recording of an younger kid desperately trying to fit in with the older raiders on a tryout run in Blackwing Lair shows that -- the kid's comments end up distracting the raid so much that the group accidentally pulls Broodlord. (Note: You have been warned about the Vent recording, since it will scar you for life and make you really wonder about the youth of America.)
This has set some people reminiscing about the best comments they've heard on Vent, and the effect it can have on unprepared raids. Back in the day, when I was a noob 60 just beginning to run Scholomance, my guild leader -- who I was utterly terrified of -- laid down while we were recuperating our mana between pulls and started singing songs from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical on Vent. I started singing along, he choked on a cigarette, and we both started laughing. In the ensuing hysteria, which NO ONE else on the run understood, I somehow managed to run directly into two groups of mobs. We wiped and I was not allowed to talk to the guild leader in runs anymore.
Do you have any horrible Ventrilo wipe stories to tell?

Frankly, the 11-yr old sounds....like an 11 yr old. Unfotunately, all the other tools on the chat *also* sound like 11 yr olds. I don't worry about the future of America, I worry about the tomorrow of America.

Well, a friend of mine gave me darn good advice before I got in trouble - don't use voice activation...use push-to-talk. I'd always done voice activation in the past, but quickly realized yelling "oh #$@$!" when I got in trouble, might not be the best thing on a full vent server.
Though I have managed to distract people...the two side mouse buttons are my push-to-talk buttons, front one for the channel, back one for my gf. Yeah, I got those mixed up one day and said some pretty steamy things to the raid group...there was awkward silence before someone replied "I always knew you had a thing for me" - and then everyone cracked up.

Oh my god, this is hilarious but this is the exact reason we try and keep the kids out of our guild. Guild chat is bad enough, but Teamspeak...

I know you used a "generic" graphic from the ventrilo site for this article, but it's of our guilds ventrilo and people are already asking if that's a recording of us. It is in fact NOT a recording of us, we have strict rules about profanity and topic of conversation on our vent server. It would be much appreciated if you would delete or change the graphic in this article.
Thanks in advance.

We had a kid like this in my guild, he wasnt a bad kid, but he used to always come into vent while we were raiding and annoy us, then get mad when we told him to level so he could come with us. Go figure.

I don't have a vent wipe story. But I DO have an 11-year-old vent story. Was in DM doing just okay with a group of guildies wherein we had a kid along for the ride who was honestly too low to be there -- I think 55. At one point after about an hour we wipe and as we're waiting to all run back, the kid states that he needs us to wait for him for about 10 minutes. This normally wouldn't be a big deal, but when he offered up that he needed to go play ping-pong with his buddy real quick, it became an 'if we wait, I'm leaving the group' thing for at least 2 of us. /sigh. Ask an instance group to wait while you play ping-pong..... are you kidding me?

I don't really see why you would attach this issue to the voice chat software. Playing video games leads to an unusual mix of ages and personality types. While the kid may not have been griefing intentionally the concept is nothing new.

was in the process of recruiting shortly after their core transfered to Maelstrom from Spirestone (my server). While the run they are on during the recording was in fact a trial run for a few new people, Hobss was not actually with them. He just invaded their vent and they were too incredulous to kick him out.
And the Broodlord fight was kind of rocky, but there wasnt really any danger of them wiping. Broodlord is an accidental pull half the time anyway, such is the nature of the depression rooms, i mean supression rooms. When encounters were being challenging they were quick to shut Hobss up. BWL was on easy farm for at the time. If I remember correctly, I believe they talk about disenchanting most of the stuff that drops.
while this recording has it's moments, I reccommend the one of a raid leader ranting at his guild after wiping on Grand Widow in Naxx. Its awsome cause its soooo amazingly true. Anyone who has ever been a raid leader will get a special kick out of it.
(this one is also not work safe, and turn down your volume, its starts off pretty loud)
