According to several threads that are making their way around the WoW.com forums, the Horde guild Overrated, from the Black Dragonflight realm, had a majority of their members get the WoW death penalty: the permaban. Yes, this is THE Overrated, probably the top Horde guild on the US servers. Why the permaban? Well, according to various claims in the threads, a bunch of the guild members used hacks to run through walls to C'Thun as opposed to fighting the trash mobs and the bosses along the way. Of course, there are a couple more rumors in the forums about what really happened, as tends to be the case with all forum drama.
If the wall hack is true...damn. All those incredibly geared players are just gone! It was stupid to try a hack like that to save time, and Blizzard more than dropped the hammer on them for doing it. I sort of feel sorry for them, but the reaction from the Black Dragonflight community seems to be glee, so maybe these guys truly had it coming. Either way, I hope they have fun hitting the level mill all over again. Oh, and they are recruiting! Get your apps in now! CTRaid, Decursive and Wall Hack required mods. Hah. I kid.
Anyone out there from Overrated? Or can anyone shed some further light on the situation?
And if you come across any other guild drama, the resident Gossip Queen of WoW Insider would love to hear from you.

It's good to see blizzard crack down on cheaters.

The patch we used was called 'Patch 5.mpq' not Patch 3, but nevertheless the outcome was basically the same.
We used this cheat two or three times to make the headache of C'thun trash go away. And we only began using it after we had already "beaten the game." While most of us were aware of the possible consequences, we basically had to do it. Let me explain.
Since the majority of our guild's equipment is beyond that offered in the temple of AQ, there is little incentive for our raiders to go there at all. Basically all we get from there is a nasty repair bill. The only loot worth anything drops off of the last boss, so naturally it came to the point where only a handful wanted to go to AQ because of the incredible cost of time and gold, with little reward.
With this cheat, we could basically eliminate the repair bills, the gueling 4++ hour clear, and actually have the required raid online to kill C'Thun before people started getting sandy and logging out.
So we hacked. We lost. Game over. It was a good run.
Did we hack Naxx? Nope. Although we have been guilty of 'clever use of game mechanics'. We by chance discovered the 8/8 wrath bug on Patchwerk on our third or fourth kill and used that exploit the following week before it was hotfixed. Resetting the four horsemen isn't hard. Besides, it gives no advantage because you still have to wait for the dead to run back.
Estimated total eBay value of banned accounts: $60,000+
Was it worth it in the end? Hell yes.

"Had to?"
Listen, the game is not about collecting 'phat l00tz.' It is about investing time for entertainment and socializing. The folks that only play so that they can express their ingrained need to get the next best thing are many of the same players that play this game to the point of it no longer being fun. It is no longer a game, it is their personal identity. It is a problem and leads to behavior like this, not to mention the folks who completely go nuts when their server is down for a few minutes longer than anticipated on Tuesday. If you are so OCD that you can't enjoy the game, find something else to do.
